Excellent local park. Why? Read on.
Like the majority of places, this park is rooted in natural history. The park takes its name after a NJ Lenape Native American, Warinanco, who signed a deed on October 28, 1664. Although this park is surrounded by dense fogs of modern civilization, Warinanco Park represents a piece of land that time travels back to a time when the area was covered in lush, green landscapes.
This park is well-maintained in every aspect. The park has basketball and tennis courts, plus baseball, and soccer fields. Bike and trail paths surround the park. A running track that's well-lighted into evening hours. Playgrounds for children and ample picnic areas for all. Exercise path with many exercise stations along the way.
What adds to the awesomeness of this park are the events held at the park. For example, the BioBlitz nature activity events, or the outdoor film event for families, or the NJ Symphony Orchestra performing a free outdoor event.
There is a new addition to this park: The Warinanco Sports Center. It's simply an upgrade to the long standing ice rink. It now offers a food bar opened into evening hours for the community, plus a range of rooms which can be rented for meetings, parties, etc.
What truly makes this park special is the care and dedication from its staff and volunteers. Gardens and a sleuth of trees and plants envelope this park that creates its own ecosystem. It's a thriving habitat for all sorts of life. I am not a bird fan, but this park attracts a variety of birds that I have not seen elsewhere.
The lake is one of the few that is locally stocked with fish. To the excitement of fishing enthusiasts, a fishing pier was added last year.
Oh, let's not forget about the pedal operated boats (see my photo). They have been iconic to this park since the 70s. $10hrly
Photography: excellent place for photographs. This is one of the limited parks that don't require a commercial fee should you desire to bring in a lightbox. Great place for sunrise photos (see my attached drone panoramic photo).
Nightskies: in the midst of the park, particularly west of the lake, creates a dark cove surrounded by trees to observe the nightskies. However, if you attempt to park inside the park afterhours (after 10pm) to watch sky events or to do astrophotography, you'll be met by police. To avoid this, park anywhere on the many side public streets and walk in...

Read moreWarinanco is a originally well-laid out urban oasis that can be used for recreation or as a park in the passive sense (nature). The park, overall, is used more for recreation than as a nature experience, and this is reflected in the quality of each use: the recreational aspects such as track, ball fields, skating rink, appear better maintained than the Park grounds (trees, gardens). My rating is based on the poor state of the plantings not the park overall. Originally, the park was rather an elegant landscape and (IIRC), laid out by the successors to Vaux et al who designed NYC's famous parks. Landscapes like this require a great deal of upkeep, and Union County has focussed (understandably) on recreation rather than passive use - though it has begun (2023) to work on some of the neglected landscaping features. As an aside the pandemic enabled a bit of wildlife to return: I recently found a good-sized beaver home on a stream bed. As a predominantly recreational park in the early 21st Century, it's a good escape, place to play, and not a bad place for a stroll. Just don't look too closely at the grounds, and don't stray onto the ball grounds. PS Don't speed on Park roads as the 25 MPH speed limit is...
