I recently attended the June 22, 2023 3-day Long Range Shooting Course with Wolf Precision, Inc. The course was very informative and focused on really teaching the fundamentals of precision shooting. I am not a hunter however I enjoy shooting whenever given the opportunity but have never had any formal training with rifles, let alone long range shooting. The months leading up to the course, I was both excited yet somewhat nervous about what to expect and how I was going to do. The 3-day course involved morning sessions in a classroom setting learning the fundamentals from the very basics of handling a rifle to calculating elevation and windage. With a class size of only 5 with Jamie as our main instructor and Richard assisting, we were treated with an exceptional learning experience, in a very relaxed atmosphere, which allowed us to ask questions and interact with them one on one. I felt very confident and knowledgeable after the 3 days of classroom instruction in the concepts of elevation, windage, distance calculations and target size estimation.
Our afternoons were spent on the shooting range and all I can say is Wow! The fully suppressed custom precision rifles with 25x Kahles scopes and shooting 22 Creedmoor were exceptional to shoot. We not only were treated to world class shooting instruction but in a safe and fun environment. Jamie and Richard did not just take us out to the range and have us just shoot at targets. There was a specific well thought out curriculum of learning how to shoot with particular attention to very basic steps and techniques to become a consistent and accomplished shooter. Jamie explained to us in detail the rationale for why we were shooting at specific targets and what we were to learn from each excercise. His method of instruction was so relaxed and non threatening and it was evident that Jamie not only has a passion for precision shooting but he wants others to experience it as well. Not only were our afternoons chock full of shooting but oh did we have fun! The four of us were like big kids on Christmas day. We couldn't stop talking about our shooting experiences during dinner but also on our ride home to WV after our 3-day course was completed.
I embarked on this journey just excited to learn something new that I had never experienced before. I came in as a greenhorn and left after 3 wonderful days feeling fully confident that I can consistently shoot dime-sized targets at 100 yds, head shots of life-sized woodchucks at 350 yds and exploding colored-water gallon milk jugs at 1000 yds. Something Jamie said to us, "beware of the guy who only has one gun because I bet you he's very good at shooting with it" , resonated with me. I want to be that person. Jamie is in the process of making me a custom precision rifle and I can't wait because I will definitely be signing up for some more courses that Wolf Precision, Inc. offers. As a matter of fact, I will be signing my wife up for the new one-day Introduction to Long Range shooting experience that is offered in October.
I have trekked 24 days to Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas, and the Patagonia mountains of Argentina/Chile, rafted for 2 weeks on the Canning river in the Brooks Range/ANWR region of Alaska, fished for world record lake trout in Big Bear Lake Northwest Territory of Canada. I can say without hesitation that my 3-day exposure to long range shooting with Jamie Dodson and Wolf Precision, Inc. has been just as life changing! I can't say enough so I'll just say...
Read moreI recently had the privilege of attending a 3-day long-range shooting course at Wolf Precision, Inc. After spending an immersive, educational, and highly enjoyable few days with the team, it's clear to me that they love what they do.
One of the standout elements of the course was undoubtedly the caliber of the instructors. Jaime and Richard's knowledge and experience were evident from the onset, always delivering insightful and clear explanations on various aspects of long-range shooting. The classroom portions of the class were well thought out and engaging, with plenty of opportunities for questions and discussion. The instructors were also very approachable and always willing to help, which made for a very comfortable learning environment.
The course content itself was compact and comprehensive. It covered everything from fundamental shooting principles to advanced techniques, with an excellent balance of theoretical instruction and hands-on practice. The course was structured in a way that built upon the previous day's learnings, gradually taking us from basics to more complex elements of long-range shooting. I feel like I've gained a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that I can continue to build upon.
The school rifle, chambered in 22 Creedmore, was top-notch. It was the most accurate and easy shooting rifle that I've ever been behind. The range was in a beautiful rural location with a variety of targets at different distances, which made for a fun and challenging shooting experience. The winds were very unpredictable and constantly changing, which provided a great opportunity to practice wind reading skills. By day 2 everyone in the class was able to make hits out to 1000 yards, which was a testament to the quality of the instruction and equipment.
The class size was just right, not too large to detract from the personalized coaching experience, but big enough to foster a sense of camaraderie among participants. This created a comfortable and encouraging learning environment that was conducive to both individual and group progress. I made some life-long friends during the course that I plan to continue shooting with in the future.
What set Wolf Precision apart was the passion and dedication of Jaime and Richard. They went above and beyond to ensure that every participant had a memorable and valuable experience. Their commitment to imparting skills and knowledge, along with their welcoming and professional demeanor, was truly commendable. You couldn't ask for better instructors.
The 3-day long-range shooting class at Wolf Precision is a holistic, well-structured, and exceptionally delivered course. It's an absolute must for anyone looking to improve their long-range shooting skills, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to both beginners and seasoned shooters alike. I would suggest using a school rifle even if you have a rifle of your own, as it will allow you to focus on learning and practicing the fundamentals without having to worry about equipment. Also, if you're an MOA shooter be prepared to be converted to Mils. I'm already looking forward to attending another course with Wolf Precision in the future, after I have them build me a rifle of my own. There is no going back to stock after shooting a Wolf...
Read moreReview I wrote in 2019 after the class: Great class. I learned a lot. Coming in with basically zero real long range shooting experience was a bit intimidating but it was a very relaxed and encouraging atmosphere from the get-go. Heck I had never even shot from the prone position and I'm not exactly a small dude so I was worried about the, let's call them ergonomics aspects of it all 😬. However, the lower firing line has rubber mats on top of slate. Very comfortable to lay on. The upper line is nice grass. So not laying in the mud or anything. The classroom sessions were very well organized and the range time was very well run. I came to this school with the goal of being able to hit a target 1,000 yards away and this was accomplished on day 2. If I had it to do over again I would shoot a school rifle. One less headache and to be able to concentrate on the lessons being taught. Spotting for other shooters was also a great experience. Never in a million years did I think I'd be able to watch the "wake" of a bullet as it flys to the target! Also, I can't stress enough this was an actual school/learning experience. This wasn't a 3 day sales pitch to get you to buy one of Jamie's rifles. Now that being said, seeing them perform on the range is pretty much enough to sell you on one though. So be warned you're gonna want one!
Review update, after 2 years: 2 year update: I still have the long range bug. Didn't take long for 1,000 yards to become routine. I am shooting out well beyond 1,000 yards, out to a mile (1,760 yards) on a regular basis. Everything I learned in Jamie's class I still use to this day. Actually the binder/book we got, is still in my range bag to this day. Wolf Precision's class gave me the foundation and maybe even more important it gave me the confidence and ability to back it up, to walk up to a firing line, in front of veteran shooters, including a dude with a world record, dial my scope, and put lead on steel 3/4 of a mile down range. And make it look like I belonged, like I knew what...
