If I could give this place six stars I would. I’ve been here many times for not only the house but also all the amazing events put on for our fortunate Knoxville community. Even before entering the house, the courtyard and landscape are breathtaking and so well kept up with. It morphs into a different kind of beauty all year round. I’m talking the best fall colors and the brightest spring flowers. It’s interesting, beautiful and peaceful. Our guide Patrick was warm, fun, welcoming and wildly knowledgeable on not only the house its self but also Knoxville in general. He could tell you absolutely anything about the house and still make it intriguing. He started the tour with a brief but thorough introduction, if you’re into hearing an honest well rounded representation of the houses history and simply like being educated on the attraction you want to see, I would highly recommend this. If you’re a small minded baby, I would highly suggest skipping this and just going to a Smoky Mountain moonshine tasting. I know, sometimes thinking is hard :(
But truly, this house is a treasure hunt into the past with each room more impressive then the last. With historical interior design, paintings and literature it brings something interesting for everyone. I’d like to send such a huge thanks to Patrick for how well he is preserving the house and the history that goes with it....
Read moreWHAT AN EXPERIENCE 😊 .... If you love HISTORY then this is a not so hidden but overlooked tourist attraction. Hard to say those words when the Mabry-Hazen family were slave owners.
This known fact is the reason why many Black Knoxvillians have never made it a priority to "scratch the itch of curiosity" for the house that sits on a hill off Dandridge Ave. Plus I'm NOT PAYING to visit an estate that made its livelihood off of human trafficking of Black Americans.
However, the new Executive Director has made it his mission to tell THE COMPLETE HISTORY of the Mabry-Hazen legacy. I was able to fully appreciate the special Juneteenth Celebration Tour that took place 6/19/2023. This tour was free, hence me taking the opportunity to relieve my curiosity about the house on the hill.
This is an older historic home so it's really not accessible for those with mobility deficiencies. The tour consists of ambulating up and down stairs to key places in the home. This can be quite difficult because this is an older structure therefore the steps are not like modern day...
Read moreWe had a pastport book which means we didn't pay admission (we did when we brought the book a good deal if you plan on seeing all the house in Knoxville). The gentleman who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable about the family and the house. He gave us a 20-minute overview of the family then we moved into the tour of the home. We also talked about the enslaved people and domestic workers of the home. He also talked about what each family had done to expand the house and what the last person's wishes has been for the home. I think we saved the best tour for last. They do have parking and a bathroom in the house. They are doing work on the house also, Im not sure what but they seemed to stop...
