My boyfriend and I love dogs and have always wanted to adopt. We moved to Texas four years ago and often drove by the Central Texas SPCA, talking about how our future fur babies could be rescued from this shelter. We had never adopted a dog together before, and we wanted to ensure we could provide the right lifestyle for our future fur babies.
The first time I went into the Central Texas SPCA, I was greeted by Birdie, who is so kind and cares deeply about all the animals. This love and passion were huge drivers in our decision to adopt and work with her. I had a ton of questions and had been reading about all the available pets on the website. She helped us navigate all our questions with ease and explained the different personalities, behaviors, and insights about the dogs. She took the time to understand what we were looking for and gave us great recommendations on which dogs we should meet and interact with. I felt so excited but also at ease talking with Birdie; she made the process so smooth. Even though it was a busier day, she came to check in with us and helped us align on next steps while answering more questions. The whole process was amazing, and we felt so supported. We fell in love with two babies named Rueben and Ziggy (now Rodney) and began the foster-to-adopt process. We were sent home with Rueben, beloved toys, and plenty of food and treats! We introduced Rueben and Ziggy, and they quickly became the best of buds, even though they had not played together before. Rueben is the sweetest gentleman, and Rodney is sweet, playful, and full of puppy energy. My dream of having dogs finally came true!
We are now a happy family of four with Rueben and Rodney, and I feel so grateful for Birdie and everyone at the...

We are a family of four and we were looking for a new furry family member. I went in to inquire about their dogs and had to go through the application process to adopt. Several days later they contacted me that our application was accepted and then our girl came home with us!
When I left SPCA, the manager had set me up for success with our new dog. I have a slow feeder so she could gain weight properly, a whole bag of high quality food, her next medication for flea/tick/heart worms, her medical records, and what to do if I had questions. This is awesome and I'm glad a resource like this is in our community.
Further shout out to the manager -- when I was there, she was handling an elderly lady who was talking to everyone in the lobby, two ladies inquiring about adoption, a man bringing in a small puppy and redirecting him to the proper shelter, and then me and my son. She did this all with a SMILE on her face and with grace. She may not know it, but she is excellent with people and I commend her on her patience.
Overall, I had the best experience. For anyone looking to foster or adopt, I would call first to chat about their specific shelter before going in. I learned that they do have some parameters they must follow when allowing animals in AND allowing them out.
Oh!! And they are building a new building to help make space for more pups and kitties! Thanks SPCA! 10/10...
Read more11: 50 AM 1/15/2015 Just got off the phone with the receptionist there. While she gave me the number to a shelter that I could take this puppy I found, she was also very cold, hurried, and downright rude. As I tried to to explain a little bit about him, she let me know that it doesn't matter what I say, it's the shelters discretion to kill them or not. That may be true, but when someone calls you trying to do right by an baby animal and trying to avoid him being killed, the sterile approach that she took was both off putting and a bit disgusting. All I've been hoping for is to find this baby a safe place until he can find a Forever home, and she pretty much squashed ANY hope I had for it. If everyone at this establishment acts the way that receptionist did, maybe they should take another look at what they're doing there and WHY they are doing it. ALSO, when ending a phone call, the appropriate response for being thanked for even terrible, terrible service is not "Uh-huh" Click ...
