Visiting Central High School is an experience everyone should have. To walk the street where protesters against integration taunted, spat on, and did other cruel things was haunting.
The park ranger who served as our guide did an excellent job telling the history of the Little Rock Nine. He did not sugarcoat it. He presented it as if he was there.
Across from Central High, the gas station at that time still stands as well as one of the stores in that area is there as well. There is a heavily shaded memorial park across from the school that is nice to sit and reflect on the experience.
There used to be a time where this history was taught in schools. It is challenging to teach this moment in our history with the changes in state standards. This history should be experienced. I HIGHLY recommend visiting Central High School so we don't forget and recognize what these students' endured to integrate...
Read moreThey offer a Ranger-Led Guided Tour Tuesday - Saturday at 1:00 pm. Do not skip this tour! Our tour guide was Patti and she was FANTASTIC. The tour lasted about 90 min. Patti was knowledgeable, entertaining and she made the tour interactive. She has done a vast amount of research. She had pictures from the event and she read to us from book written by those who were there at the time. She challenged us to put ourselves in the shoes of those kids, their parents, the reporter’s, etc. I highly recommend taking the tour and exploring the museum. It’s a powerful experience for anyone, whether you are knowledgeable on...

It would have been nice to get an understanding ( via interviews) of what that school year was like. It had to be hard. Instead of thst the movie had a theme of this is an action that teaches us how to make change in whatever bothers us. I understand the desire to relate what happened to how does it affect me today. That's a common complaint about history. But there is still value in describing what happened and why it's a historical event...
