Lookout Mountain Visitor Center and Park was an excellent experience overall. Of course if I had my way the entire battlefield would be park land and open for touring, but even the (relatively) small park is well worth seeing, even if for the view of the city alone.
That said, there's much more than the view to be enjoyed! The rangers are knowledgeable, and excellent storytellers - particularly Jeremy!
We had an adventure on our hands when we went there - Ranger Jeremy was talking us through the battle for Lookout Mountain (as well as some background; the Chattanooga Campaign overall), when it started raining. We took shelter under the New York monument, and the rain really picked up; it was a storm. Undaunted, Jeremy continued the story, with the wind and rain howling around us, thunder cracking in the distance!
The lightning got closer and we wound up making a run for the Visitor Center along with the group, Jeremy making sure we all made it safely, and finishing the story inside as we waited for the worst of the storm to pass.
Overall it was one heck of a memorable experience, certainly one I and my family will never forget! 10/10 views, 12/10 storytelling,...
Read moreOn our way down to Florida we stopped at Chikamagua battlefield and it was great, but we learned about lookout mountain and decided to do it on the way back up north. We went a good deal out of the way on our return trip to specifically do this park. Stayed the night in Chattanooga, had breakfast and headed up the mountain. The site said it was open at 8:30 am and we arrived around 9:30 am......and no one was there, the visitor center was closed and the gates to point park were closed and locked. We wasted hours of our return trip for nothing! We called the number on the battlefield map and couldn't get any answer as to why it wasn't open or if it would open (couldn't even talk to someone).
This was a Thursday, not a federal holiday so I still have no idea why this park wasn't open. I would have liked to have taken some photos from the "breathtaking views" (one of the main reasons I wanted to come) but no, the gate was locked and the only thing I could do was use my zoom to take a few pictures of the monument and some canons. Total fail guys thanks for the...
Read moreIf you area local you know to park at the bottom of thr hill amd walk the trail and not pay that $20 dollars to get into this park which the views seem to be lacking in the clouds. Huge rip off in my eyes just like anything to do with the government. Only come in Winter or fall. The vegetation is thick. Wasnt much of a battle anyway seeing how the confederates ran as soon as the yankees started coming up the hill so why all thr small monuments i have no idea. We went up the old fashioned way in the rain just like the Yankees did in the battle of the clouds. The trail is needing lots of care. Certain spots near the top are dangerous. You really dont have to follow the signs here. Up takes you simply to the top and down will takes you where you...
