Compensation Land is a small tract of land along the Hackensack River just south of the Richard W DeKorte Nature Preserve. When the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission built the nature preserve and trails, as compensation (hence the name) a tract of land was drained from the Hackensack River and designated as a marshlands and wetlands site. This tract is completely inaccessible by either vehicle or foot; the only access is by boat, and only official ones at that are allowed in.
