It was my first time visiting At Home (Madison Wi) and was so excited! I found tons of stuff I needed (wanted) then proceed to the register. My total was $200 and entered my debit card. “Not authorized” it stated. The lady behind the register said the system hasn’t been working well today and asked if I could try a credit card. No problem. I swiped and it happened again. Embarrassed because a long line started forming behind me, she called for an assistant manager. Never apologizing, they sat and the register and continued pressing buttons for 5 minutes then asked me to swipe again. I tried 3 more times with 2 different cards. “Our system isn’t working today” she said again. They opened up another register to start taking other customers. Some were able to be rung out. Some weren’t. I sat there at the register for another 10 minutes by myself while both the cashier and assistant manager helped other customers. I packed my purchases up and proceeded to their registers because they obviously forgot about me. I tried my cards again with no luck. Other customers were upset they could not be rung up either. I asked if I could write a check and they said they don’t take checks. I asked if they had an ATM and they said no. I sat there waiting for them to have a solution. They said they had to ask the store manager if he could take my check. Another 10minutes passed. The manager came up and said he can’t take a check. Again, I’m looking at them like “what should I do... what is your solution”. The store manger was rude, unapologetic, offered no solution, and acted like it was my problem. He let me leave upset, without being able to buy anything and said I could come back another day. Are you kidding me? I drove 40 minutes to shop there. I understand things happen, and systems fail but that is not my problem. Those are the instances where you take a check or recommend a bank in the area to get cash. The customer service was horrible and at the end of the day, you should accept checks due to YOUR system being down. If they would have been more apologetic or not have me waiting at the registers for 45 minutes I would have been more understanding. But to have a smug arrogant manager come up and act like I was the one inconveniencing him is ridiculous. I will not be shopping at At home again. Target and ikea are fine with me (and better prices) and...
Read moreAt home West Madison is a well laid out warehouse store for all things home decor. I prefer the West over the East store as I believe the West to be more organized and maintained.
I was specifically shopping for mirrors and shelves, and found dozens of popular choices for each. Unfortunately, they didn't have a simple rounds mirror without a frame, or really any mirrors without a frame, such as would be used in a bath. If I need one for a hall, surely I could find one here.
There is so much at this store it can be overwhelming at first. I suggest taking your time, and look up for signage. The store signage is easy enough to see and understand. Also, this is the old West Sam's Club, and the East side is the old Shopko, so be prepared to walk,...
Read moreWe were shopping at this store with our 20 yo autistic son. He was sitting playing on his phone while his mom and I did some shopping. After about 20 minutes, our son found us and walked around with us. Soon a couple police officers came up to our son and asked if he talked to a customer. After we got the situation straightened out, the police informed us that the store wanted us to buy our stuff and leave. My wife and I were flabbergasted by this request. We didnt feel we could patronize a business so intolerant of disabilities. We left without making any purchase. These staff could use some serious customer service training. One redeeming aspect of the event was the concern and understanding shown by the Madison police...
