Went with a friend to see Sherlock the Musical since both of us grew up in a small town with a large community theater presence, neither of us having been to the Empress before. We were both impressed with the production and enjoyed the small town feel of the place. We might have chosen seats further back than the front row had we known just how close the audience is to the stage, but on the other hand we were totally immersed in the play! We came away with an appreciation for the talent of the performers, and their enthusiasm. The space is unique and it was a fun experience to be there. I would have liked to have a simple program included in my ticket price, or been offered one to purchase somewhere before getting to my seat. Apparently you had to get them at the concession counter. Driving down old Main Street Magna in the evening with the nostalgic street lights and finding the EMPRESS lite up in a very early 20th century fashion is like turning back the clock. I would consider this a little like an off Broadway theater. A place to find new fresh talent, a place where energetic new performers are anxious to get noticed and recognized, a place where the local community can take pride to adding a venue for culture for their families and friends.
