Twisted Limits Escape Rooms — Attraction in McHenry

I've played a lot of escape games at a number of different places, and have far more wins than loses. In all that experience, I can confidently say that Twisted Limits stands out, and not in a good way.

I've played two rooms at Twisted Limits, and theirs are the only escape games I've ever played where it really felt like the game master and designer weren't on my side, that they didn't want me to succeed. Puzzles can (and should) be challenging, but at NO point in any room should players feel so confused and lost that they just throw their arms up and say, "You know what, I give up." If your players get to that point, they just aren't having fun. And both times I've played Twisted Limits, I've reached that point. That's a pretty poor reflection on the game masters and designers.

Along the same lines, solutions should always make sense, even if it's only in retrospect. I'm of the opinion that if a player, upon hearing the solution to a puzzle, ever says, "OK, I would never ever have come up with that." that's not a great puzzle. It's totally fine if a player can't figure something out and then afterwards has it explained and shouts, "OMG! OF COURSE!" Sadly, in my experience, Twisted Limits' puzzles too often fall into the first category.

And finally, both times I've played their games, I've also encountered a fair amount of taunting and shouting over the game room walls from the game master. Definitely not the experience I'm looking for. And definitely highlights my main point: the game masters and designer are NOT on your side.

Skip Twisted Limits. Go to 60 to Escape in Gurnee instead. Their puzzles are challenging but fun, and the game masters are 100% on...

Experienced “The Passage” this evening. From the moment you step in the room, you will be captivated by the decor.

The attention to detail is top notch. There are no locks or number combos in this room! Prepare to be fully immersed in the story and to solve puzzles that tailored to the adventure.

No spoilers… but these puzzles … are wicked cool! This room has things I’ve never seen before in escape rooms.

I can’t say what… but what I can say is you won’t be disappointed!

There is one puzzle that’s flat out brutal, but all others can be solved with relative ease… if you have done rooms before.

Would NOT recommend as someone’s first escape adventure, but could easily be tackled once you understand how these adventures are to be played.

We were a team of 4, and we were able to escape, but we have done 50+ escape adventures.

I can’t give enough props to the staff. It’s obvious they enjoy what they do, and that they want your escape experience to be a good one. They went above and beyond to ensure our time with them was what we expected. Kuddos to Twisted for not having the front office run by teenagers who could care less.

That’s not what you get here!

I came here this weekend with my wife and some out of town friends to try something fun. I am relatively new to escape rooms (as was our group) but we were able to finish both within the time limit.

Of the 3 escape rooms I've tried, we found the ones at Twisted limits in McHenry top tier. the rooms were well decorated, the puzzles the right level of though provoking, and the staff very friendly.

We personally found both rooms quite doable in the time limit if you are familiar with gaming/ puzzles but that the room allowed for various player strengths.

Both staff members were super friendly. They talked to us about game theory, room design, DnD, and various other topics. We found them both quite entertaining.

We also enjoyed that they let us do our thing, and didn't offer help we didn't need/ask for. We tried the passage and behind the curtain, and both did not require any hints (however we did ask for one as a result of a faulty connection of one of the components) but that is on us for not slotting it all the way in.
