Extra Space Storage — Attraction in Metuchen

I rented a unit at the Metuchen location for about a year. Alorda was extremely helpful during my move it. She answered all of my questions, showed me the quickest/easiest route to my unit and was an all around pleasant person whenever I needed to reach out to her. One of my main concerns was safety and Alorda assured me that this location didn't have any issues with safety.

The location was clean and quiet. My time there was fairly uneventful. I tried to go during off hours so I can't speak on how things are when it's busy. The units and halls were clean. I liked that they had the energy saving motion lights but there were a few times that they didn't turn on in a timely manner. Which made being there after dark even creepier than it already was.

The few interactions I had with people were usually polite and passing. Except for one with an older gentleman. I apparently had backed up too close to the loading area. He was angry that he didn't have any room to get the dolly around and apparently a few of his items were damaged when he tried to squeeze by a tight spot. It was early and again, an off hour so I totally wasn't expecting anyone else there, I wasn't told I couldn't back up the way that I did and it just never occurred to me that it would be difficult for anyone to get by. I apologized to him but he was pretty angry and went on a bit of a rant the whole time he was there. Needless to say, I made sure to leave a fair amount of space between my car and the poles near the bay doors any other time I was there. I only mention it to possibly save someone else from blocking others or from being blocked.

My only issue with Extra Space is their corporate policy on rent changes. It's so random. They do send you a post card notification...I think a month ahead of the increase...but I didn't feel like that was enough notice. I can't remember exactly what the postcard said but I'm pretty sure it was at or about $100. Whatever the increase was, it was enough to make me want to move out immediately. I called and spoke with Alorda. She was very understanding and willing to work with me on the pricing. While I wasn't able to go back to my original monthly payment, she was able to help me enough that I stayed a few more months.

When it was time to move out, Alorda was again extremely helpful. I made an unintentional mistake during move out and she was extremely understanding. I cannot say enough about how pleasant it was to work with her. The employees, Alorda and Tyla specifically, are the only reasons why I'm giving this location 5 stars. Otherwise, I would give it 3 or 4 stars based on how annoyed I was with their corporate increase policies.

I would recommend this location but would also recommend that you absolutely pay attention to all mailings from them. Maybe even just call once a month and verbally confirm pricing. If you're anything like me and not one to look at your mail often, this might be a good way for you to avoid unexpected...

It is not my repertoire to give thanks and praise for good service I deserve and expect. But in the case of your Metuchen, New Jersey location I’d like to make an exception; your employees, Ashley and the outlet manager Alorda went far and above in their professionalism, extending sound, and good advice and generally helpful in all aspects of my doing business with Extra Space Storage. At this location I’m currently renting three storage units; two climate controlled; 10’ X 20’ and a 5’ X 10’ and an outside unit 10’ X 30’ for a total price that I’m happy with. With this said; I do have four (4) suggestions that I respectfully like too extend:

1. the complex should have a small green dumpster For tenant use.
2. there should be at various locations around the outside perimeter garage cans available for your tenants use; especially in the interior of the loading zones.
3. My outside unit offers no overhead protection rain and sleet when numerous other outside units do. You should offer this very desirable protection for all your outside units, not just various ones located around the exterior of your main storage building. This would keep my bald head from getting rained on each time I open and close my outside storage unit.
4. Each storage unit (interior and exterior) should have a hook outside the storage unit too hang the lock on; this would facilitate the problem that the tenant upon unlocking the storage unit from placing the opened lock on the ground or in the snow or in my pocket.

I noticed that you just recently remodeled your showroom I’m sure at great expense. I suggest that maybe the money would be better spent offering your tenants a more comfortable experience by implementing the suggestions I recommend. Put the money in the product not in the show.

UPDATE: I’ve moved out of this location because one managers harassment. She had an issue with the amount of time I spent in my storage unit the day after I moved into my unit. I was trying to organize my unit since I just moved in less than 24 hours ago and I was told I can only be there for an hour or 2 because according to the contract, you cannot linger or loiter in or around their facility. I didn’t know organizing my storage unit had a time limit or was considered lingering or loitering. She goes on to say “you can’t do “that” here(what exactly was I doing that I cannot do?), you can’t lounge here and you can’t work on your business here” which I wasn’t doing. I was sitting in a chair organizing my unit, but that doesn’t mean I’m lounging, I’m organizing my belongings. And working on a business????? Where is that coming from? I’ve never had this kind of extremely uncomfortable experience at a storage facility before. To prompt me to have to rent another uhual and move all of my belongings after only being there for a few weeks is remarkable. I can say it’s safe to say I’ll never use extra space storage again, and I’ll be going back to the previous storage company I had in...
