Fort Hancock is a very cool fort with features no other fort I have seen have. It was originally built in the 1860s but never completed then in 1890 it became an experimental fort for the Endicott Period. Battery Potter and Battery Dynamite were the first built. Battery Dynamites design was built in many places in the US but Battery Potter which was a gun lift battery was inefficient and replaced by the disappearing carriage of Battery Halleck. Battery Potter in the only Gun-Lift battery in the US and is occasionally open. Battery Halleck was developed in to the Nine Gun battery which was built over the 1860s work. Battery Dynamite is closed. Fort Hancock is home to the oldest lighthouse in the US built in 1764. Today many gun batteries are open for tour ONLY. Do not enter any batteries that have fences around them. This is a very important site in the history of Harbor Defense. Many old post buildings exist but are falling apart and deteriorating rapidly. A project in 2016 was imitated to restore some of the buildings but not much is done. Most buildings are locked up and for good reason as they are VERY dangerous. Do Not Enter. The park is very cool though and has a very nice beach. Highly...

The beaches are beautiful (swimming only when lifeguards are on duty) and there are plenty of places to go fishing. Just park your car in one of the many lots to go exploring by foot or on the bicycle. As a casual observer there appears to be plenty of birds and other seashore wildlife for the nature lovers. For those interested in history the fortifications and buildings of Fort Hancock are fascinating. Make sure to climb the observation deck for a view of New York. There is also a light house that offers tours. Camping and picnic areas are also available. There is a fee for parking...

Be on the lookout if you are there anytime soon. You can spend all take here if you are into photography or biking. I had my bike but I walked around to photograph. There is a little cafe close to the Fort/lighthouse parking lot just in case you need a snack. I had brought my own food cause I was out biking all day. Next time I will check out the cafe and fort and bike trails all...
