Alert park ranger misapplication of the law. In Summary: Any ADA Approved person may use ANY motorized vehicle to access the park. There is no motorized bikes allowed in the park. However, that law does NOT apply to Handicapable persons. I had a long conversation with the Superintendent for Monmouth County Park System and he corrected the mistake the rangers made in applying the no motorized bike rule to my handicapable friend. Suffice it to say that my confidence in the Park system has been restored! Thank Goodness for common sense to prevail. The sun is shining today folks! The story: We were really disappointed with the park rangers the other day. I have a friend who required a motorized small bicycle to get to where we were staying for the day on a rainy Friday. No one was in the park but I was laying on a blanket in the grass and the ranger chose to (excessively) drive his car onto the field I was laying in barely 5 feet from to me and then forced my handycapable friend to leave the park with the motorbike he needed to get around on and he spent the next few hours in the parking lot, alone. He offered a one way ride but no solution on how to get him back. With no one else there it was mind boggling why they insisted on throwing my friend out. It seemed like a huge lack of common sense. Ruined our day. "Park rules" he said. So no one can use a motorized bike on the trails. OK I get that. But this? It was more of an attack than necessary. I followed up with Monmouth County Park system and the Superintendent is supposed to get back to me. Suffice it to say, we were pretty upset with the lack of compassion and judgement from Park rangers that are usually fantastic. We are big campers and hikers and I visit and support the US Park system every chance we get. Stay tuned... I am not the forgetful type...

Fantastic place for a hike and a history lesson! Hartshorne has an extensive trail system, both paved and natural, with a wide range of difficulty levels. Trail experiences alternate between apparent isolation and gorgeous, panoramic views of Sandy Hook, the Shrewsbury River, and the Atlantic Ocean. Tour artillery batteries that were part of the network defending New York Harbor during WWII. Weatherproof kiosks contain information about the history of the site, the 16-inch guns housed there, and the people and technology responsible for them. With three parking lots, along with a trail link to the adjoining Huber Woods county park, Hartshorne Woods is an easily accessible gem along the northern edge of the Jersey shore.

This is a pretty big park with multiple entrances. The main one on Google maps has a formal parking lot with a formal bathroom. There’s even a water fountain that you can refill water bottles and your dog. Some of the paths at this entrance are paved. However they do have some hills to them. Therefore, the paths are rated as more difficult but not black diamond difficult. There’s no cost to enter the park. One of the few places it seems in NJ that you don’t have to pay. The views of The Atlantic Ocean are quite nice. From here you can see Sea Bright, NJ and marvel on how narrow it is. You can spend a considerable amount of time here. Make sure you pack enough food. There are no food vendors in this park.

Great place for a walk. You can enter the park from the road or kayack over and hang out on the peir with friends. The park has a great view of the Navesink river and the ocean. The park is home to an abandoned World War II bunker that's fenced off from entering (but there's usually a hole cut into it for you to enter, but don't get caught! Don't worry, you won't get arrested). There's an information board outside the enterance that shows the blueprints of the bunker and it's interesting to look at. This park has a lot of cool history and it's very interesting to learn about. I visit nearly every week in the summer, it's a frequent hangout place for me and my friends. Worth a visit!

It's been years since I was in this park. The trails are just as nice now as they were back then. Very well marked and maintained. Some of the trails are wooded dirt trails and others are paved. Great views of the river and ocean from the battery trail. I walked a few of the shorter trails and most of the loop. It's a busy park, especially on wknds. There are other lots and other trails throughout the park land you can go to as well. This one also has a bathroom and water fountains for both human and pets. Great park with trails for all hiking levels. 3rd photo is proof of the lantern fly infestation in that area.

Hartshorne Woods Park is a beautiful hilly wooded 794 acre site overlooking the Navesink River. This park is one of the highest elevations along the Atlantic Coast and was a coastal defense site for the NY harbor because of this. I was able to climb to the top of the Lewis Overlook and enjoy the scenic views. It’s a great place to run, ride your bike and walk your dog. The trees provide a lot of shade. You can stay on the wide paved paths or venture in the woods. Fun Fact: Hartshorne Woods Park has the most extensive and challenging trails in the Monmouth County Park System; over 15 miles.
