I recently visited Lake Bde Maka Ska and was immediately struck by its beauty. This serene lake is located in the heart of Minneapolis and offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
During the summer months, the lake is a hub of activity, with people fishing, boating, and swimming. The clear waters are perfect for kayaking or paddleboarding, while the sandy beaches are a great spot for sunbathing and picnics. The lake is also home to several fish species, making it a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts.
The walking trails around the lake are well-maintained and provide a peaceful and scenic escape from the city. The trails are perfect for a leisurely stroll or a morning jog, and the benches along the way provide a perfect spot to rest and take in the beautiful surroundings.
However, visitors should be aware that during the winter months, the walking trails around the lake can be treacherous. Puddles of snow and water form on the trails, making it difficult to maneuver. It can be especially dangerous for those who are jogging or running. I would advise visitors to take extra care while walking on the trails during this time.
Despite the treacherous conditions in the winter months, Lake Bde Maka Ska is a beautiful and serene lake that offers a peaceful escape from the city. The crystal-clear waters and well-maintained walking trails make it a perfect spot for a relaxing day out in nature. I highly recommend visiting Lake Bde Maka Ska and taking in the beauty of this...
Read moreMy bicycle and I helped create the now concrete pathway around this beautiful lake. It was over 60 years ago now that I spent as much time as I could freewheeling around this lake (Calhoun). I remember the track as barely wide enough to fit my tire tracks! Almost daily, swimming in summer, skating when they were able to create a flat enough surface in winter (though most of the time we skated on LOTI (Lake of The Isles). This place was a God given blessing and don't know how I would have survived without it. I was a young transplant from Northern California, Oakland to be exact, and I never adjusted to the climate, clinical depression became my closest companion - I was too young to know it was all weather related. But in my early 20s I made The Great Escape back to my home in sunny CA. It was in February when I did that, the flowers growing around the sidewalk made me weep upon landing at my new home in Monterey, CA. But I do appreciate and love Minnesota. A remarkable and beautiful place, just too harsh for me. WTH is "Bde Maka Ska"? I'll Google it. Loads of Native American history around those parts, I'm sure that's the reason, but it'll always be Lake...
Read moreHow arrogant do you have to be to insist that the name of a pro-slavery politician is its "real name", and not the name it's been called for centuries by the people who have called the area home for far longer? I saw one review complaining that the restoration of the Dakota name is too "political", as if imposing the name of a pro-slavery politician onto the lake isn't "political". If anything restoring the original name is making it LESS "political". I live in Alaska where we've all embraced the name Denali for many years before it was officially changed back, and my extended family lives in the Twin Cities; I hope you guys will become mature enough to embrace Bde Maka Ska as well. You are occupying the ancestral and unceded land of the Dakota people; the least you can do is respect...
