I don't know what it takes to open a restaurant. And I don't necessarily know what it all takes to make certain ones so successful. But my experience at Taberna for its opening night was unconscionable. I want to start with something positive so I will say that the tacos are, in my opinion, tasty and probably priced right. I sat down with three friends, and noticed that while most of the tables were taken there were some empty spots and there wasn't a line out the door so it wasn't like it was super slammed. The waiter was polite, but it took pretty long to get waters to the table such that they arrived with the three margaritas that were ordered for the Monday special ($6 margs). You are charged for chips to snack on while you wait unlike many Mexican cuisine places where chips and salsa are usually complimentary. But this is a street taco place so I get that difference, but we ordered guacamole with the chips for $8...it was not $8 guacamole... When the drinks did come they tasted like a crude attempt at an extremely watered down margarita. To make matters even worse when the bill came the drinks were rung up at full price, and when I pointed this out to our waiter he said they weren't doing it for the opening! Thanks for mentioning something man!!! I would never have gotten one. It wasn't worth the $6 let alone $10! The tacos are reasonably priced and are quite good. One of the three I ordered I wasn't a huge fan of, but it was a wild card pick to see if I liked it. However, when our food arrived none of the plates were served to the correct people and we had to play musical tacos trying to figure out which plate went to which person. We asked a staff member for some assistance in helping to identify what was what and she seemed to lack any knowledge on the subject. We did figure it out in the end. My party wanted churros for dessert, which didn't even get put in right away until our waiter circled back and realized they hadn't come out yet. I'm not in the restaurant business, but this place was not ready for opening. Maybe a soft opening would have been better. It was a dreadful experience, and I'll either only go if the group really wants to or solely for...
Read moreCame in on a quiet Tuesday for lunch and was invited onto a spacious patio dotted with cheery yellow chairs. We didn’t realize there was a taco special on Tuesdays - street tacos are $2.22 each. The selection is expansive, interesting and diverse - Korean, Vegan Chorizo, Crispy Shrimp, Baja Fish, Carne Asade, etc For $2, I wasn’t expecting the tacos to be very big or filling. Boy was I wrong!!! Every taco I ordered was stuffed full of fresh ingredients. The fish on the Baja fish taco was huge and the Carne Asada was over flowing with bits of savory steak. I ordered 4 tacos and was full after eating only 2.
The onion rings were very unique, the shell was crispy and reminiscent of an egg roll. Onion rings tasted surprisingly light and not greasy at all. Hubby proclaimed them to be the best onion rings he has ever tasted!
The coconut tres leches was decadent and moist. Check it out if you are looking to end your meal with a sweet treat.
The absolute highlight of our experience at Taberna Tacos was the service. My daughter has food allergies and the owner actually took the time to learn our names and navigate through the menu with us. He was so genuinely warm and kind and even made a custom allergy friendly dessert for her.
We didn’t have any issues with parking by the restaurant and if outside spots are full, there is a parking garage with spots for patrons.
We didn’t explore the inside too much but saw some arcade games and lots of big screens. Air conditioning was a bit strong and it felt a bit chilly indoors. Thankfully it was perfect on the patio.
Taberna is casually upscale and hip, blending in perfectly with the aesthetic of the Bde Maka Ska area. It’s the kind of place you could dress up a bit to have drinks with friends or come in totally casual with your kids - it all works at Taberna :)
We had an absolutely wonderful experience at Taberna and can’t wait to visit again and hope...
Read moreMy first encounter here and we were initially greeted well, but when the order was incorrect and we waited a long time for missing items including waters; and encountered further delays in service. Which we did not complain. I also requested a to go order to be entered when they brought out the missing items so we didn't have more delays. Our waiter forgot about us and we kept waiting to pay for the food. I waited an additional 30 minutes just to pay and leave. I asked the manager to account for the service and he felt it was acceptable for all of the issues encountered and told me to have a nice day due to frustration with my encounter. As a nurse working in the medical field it was a day off to relax and sit in the sun and have a good experience at a new place . When I asked for his managers name he said why dont you take my business card and call this guy at 6 and he can take your complaints. I said is he your manager or is he just like you meaning your colleague? He said he is my colleague and I'm the general manager there is no one to call above me. So do not go here as an indigenous person and be treated as though your money doesnt spend just like everyone elses. He could have apologized and even offered 5 or 10 percent off the order for all the issues with his new waiter but instead he wanted to act like my order was nothing. I will be passing my experience on to my friends and colleagues. What he also didnt know was my colleague who gave me money to pay for her order had a horrible encounter prior to this one and said afte r how it went down this time she will not be...
