At 53.3 acres this is Broward County's most archaeological significant natural area. Artifacts found here show that people have lived here from 500 B.C. through roughly A.D. 1000 to 1200. Centuries later this area was home to Miccosukee leader Chitto Tustenuggee known as the snake warrior. He was designated chief during the Second Seminole war whose beginning was tied to the Cooley massacre in Ft. Lauderdale. For more on that see my review of Colee Hammock Park. Two Seminole settlements once sat on two islands in the marsh and were occupied for a dozen years before the Seminoles were attacked and fled the area. In 1947 the land became the Perry farm. Community interest in the land as an archaeological and historic site caused it to be purchased in 1992 by the State of Florida through the Emergency Archaeological Property Acquisition Fund. On January 21, 2004 Snake warrior Island opened as a natural area.

As you walk around the area it is easy to see the beauty that attracted the native people to the area. The lake and eight created wetlands are surrounded by live oak, gumbo limbo, strangler fig, cypress, red maple, wild coffee, beautyberry, fire bush, pickerel weed, eel grass, and rushes. Wildlife in the area include wading birds and ducks, red wing blackbirds, wood storks, little blue and tricolored herons, anhinga, white ibis, and and osprey. On my visit I saw many iguanas and other kinds of lizards. Amenities include benches, signs, and picnic tables. A half mile paved walkway loops through the preserve and takes you back to the...

I love this park, its located just across my house i could even go walking there if i wanted to, they open early and close about 7 or 8pm not sure most of people go here to exercise, walking, jogging or just see the nice green area and the nice lake from time to time you could see some turtles popping out their heads from the water and iguanas running scare in front your path whenever see you passing by, anyway its just nice to see a little of green natural area. So this morning i went to this park again i was gonna go to target store but at the time passing by the park i decided to park my car inside the parking lot and took a walk just one lap cuz the park looked so green and beautiful probably took me about 15 to 20 minutes no more than that so to my surprise i found my car window all smashed out i got so upset that i cried called my husband and the police to reported. Im not saying to people not to go to this park but just be very careful. As me im gonna think twice before going to this park i guess i ll go farther to TY park its little bit further but i rather be...

A piece of history, of what ever is left of the Everglades in South Eastern Florida. Looks like the county created a some what recreation of what it once naturally looked like in this part of Broward County. Although there isn't much to look at, it is big open space with a trail to run, jog or hike. If you are into history that dates back to the days of the Native American Indians, the Spanish and early Florida pioneers, you'll want to stop at the sign posts through out the trail. The park even has a remaining foundation of what once was the homes of the property owners back in the early 1900's. Check it out for a nice peaceful day out.

Having lived just two blocks from this awesome park in Miramar, I spent a lot of time here over the years enjoying the bike path that encircles two beautiful ponds teaming with fish, turtles, various types of birds & wildlife. This is a great place to rest & lay out on the grass. If you’re feeling more active it’s a nice spot for bicycling, walking, yoga, &/or fitness training on the pull-up bars. I was always drawn to the pull-up bars that my body & mind benefited from in many ways. I’m so thankful for this park & all the kind people I met here. Connect with nature & self - get outdoors & visit the Warrior Island park!
