I visited this place mid July. I did the beginner hang gliding school, as well as a mile high tandem flight. These were done on two different days, the ground school included the dune gliding.
Initially my mile high tandem was the second day after the dune gliding/ground School. But the weather was unfavorable so they called to ask if I could reschedule to the next day. While this was not ideal since I was leaving town the next day, I did not have any pressing agendas, so I was able to do this, it just meant getting home later than anticipated.
Mid summer - it is hot & obviously windy because you're up high on the dunes near the ocean. They make everyone bring water with them. I recommend something with a lid because of the sand and wind. I also recommend some kind of sunglasses or even goggles because you may feel the sand blowing up into your face at times.
They will tell you to wear something for your feet because the sand can get so hot. If you tend to go barefoot a lot your feet will probably be fine. Our instructor himself went barefoot but he probably spent years going barefoot all his life. If you don't want to wear gym shoes I recommend at least something that you can run in. Something else that is popular out here are "sand socks". You can probably find something like that on Amazon if you want to purchase them ahead of time.
You probably can wear a hat underneath the helmet. I had a baseball hat on and though I was able to wear the helmet over it, I did find it to be somewhat obstructive to my view. So I highly recommend something more flexible. The helmets are mandatory and they do provide them.
To get the most out of the experience I highly recommend if you've never done this before, just watching videos on YouTube. Learn about the ways a hang glider is maneuvered so that way when you get in it you might have a better experience than I did. Hang gliding steering and altitude is affected by the weight of your body so however you lean will affect how the glider behaves. A trap I fell into was over thinking and over correcting. You really just want to hang their like in a potato sack and let the wind and the glider do its thing.
For the ground school/dune gliding we each got five runs on the dune. It wasn't until my final run that I started to get it but by then it was my last run and almost all of my runs were lackluster - I did not get as high as I was hoping and that made me sad.
The instructors were very helpful and encouraging and even children were out doing it with us. I do wish that my instructors were a little more attentive to coachingme because I wasn't getting very high up. After my third run I began really trying to pick some people's brains and I began to pull out from them what I wish they would have just been telling me already, and that was that I need to try to not think so much.
The photo package that is offered there is crap. It cist $50 and only photos come from cameras mounted on the gliders facing you so you get one angle. It just doesn't do the job if you want photos for this experience. I was there by myself and made it a point to talk to others who would be willing to take photos of me. I did find some and the photos that they took were not only wonderful, they were free. The photos I am sharing in this review, if they include me in the glider, they were taken by those people out there that were kind enough to acquiesce to my request.
All that being said, if you do the tandem hang gliding, I do highly recommend getting the photo/video package for that because views will be better. If I had chosen that I would have had footage that included a rare experience called a brocken spectre, when you are above a cloud and your shadow casts onto the cloud below you it creates a circular rainbow. Sadly I have no footage of this because I chose the wrong experience to purchase the photo package on, don't...
Read moreMy 12 and 14 year olds did the Beginner Lesson and loved it. The instructors we're awesome and did everything they could to make sure everyone had a great time. Due to covid, we were sent a link to a 20 min video to watch at home prior to arriving, but normally that video would be watched on site. We started with 30 min of demo (ground school) with everyone following along using a 3' bar and lying on their bellies to simulate the movements you do when in the air. Then harnesses and helmets were distributed to everyone, and we headed out to the sand dunes, which is 5-10 min walk. On the dunes they had 4 instructors and 4 hang gliders, and the group of 20 split up 5 to a glider. The instructors did a demo flight, then each participant took turns flying, doing 2 consecutive flights in the first round, 2 in the second round, and 1 in the final round. The instructors run with and guide the hang glider all the way until the landing, so almost every flight is successful. They let go of the guide bar and hold a rope tether if the flight is going well, and even let go of the tether if the flight is also high enough. Of the 100 flights in our group, there were maybe 5 crash landings, but the harness keeps you suspended with your upper body off the ground, so everyone was fine and there really isn't much chance of getting hurt. After the flights, we headed back as a group, filled out a quick survey about our experience, and my kids each got flight card to track their flight progress towards their Hang 1 pilot rating, which takes 5 to 10 lessons to achieve, and once you get it (which requires you doing 5 consecutive successful flights on your own with successful landings, and carrying the glider back to the top of the dune on your own after each flight), allows you to fly for free at Jockey Ridge State Park using Kitty Hawk Kites hang gliders. As a non participating parent, I felt a part of the group, staying with them the entire time, watching the ground school, chatting with the instructors, and taking photos and videos of my kids flights. As far as what to bring, other than being lotioned up for sun protection, water is the only thing you need. Each of my kids went through about a quart of water, but it wasn't a super hot day, so a quart is the minimum to bring. No need to bring food. Most everyone wore shorts, a t-shirt, and sneakers. The sand gets hot, so bare feet isn't an option, and flip flops fell off those who wore them as they ran to start their flights, so better to wear sneakers. This was definitely a highlight for my kids for this years beach week. They can't wait to come back to do the Advanced Lesson. Finally, the instructors work hard and were the reason for the great experience everyone had, so definitely bring some cash to tip...
Read moreTHE BEST EVER!!!! Please read ..... Review of Kitty Hawk Kites Hang Gliding School Reviewed November 23, 2020 As long as I can remember I have been fascinated with flight of all types and as a kid I used to jump off our outside air-conditioner unit with a towel around my neck as my "wing" hoping and thinking I could fly even for just a few seconds. I've even had dreams where I could lean into the wind just right and catch enough air to fly for a few seconds. Well, with my visit to Kitty Hawks Hang Gliding School all those childhood dreams finally came true. I visited with my wife in mid October 2020 after being on COVID lockdown in Maryland for 8 months. The weather was incredible - upper 60's lower 70's.
A few things I want to call out about my experience: First, amazing thanks to EVERY member of the KHK Hang Gliding School who we interacted with: Wolf, Billy, Bowen, Nick, Charley, Drake, Gavin, Megan, Allison, Haley. If I missed someone I'm so sorry because you all deserver all the credit in the world.
These instructors and staff are across the board among the nicest people I have ever met. They do an UNBELIEVABLE amount of work not just teaching you to fly, but also carrying the gliders back up the hill each time (just walking up those dunes by yourself is a big effort even if you are in reasonably good shape, but then add a 70-lb glider on your shoulders, 50-60 times a day??? these people are amazing!).
I would encourage everyone who reads this to make sure you TIP your instructors well. They give their all and the deserve it. It's so cool to see them high fiving and yelling encouragement to each of the students on every flight. They seem just as excited on their 30th flight of the day as their first, and this makes it fun for everyone. If they are ever exhausted of having a bad day, you sure don't ever see it.
I went for my HANG-1 certification with lessons spread out over about 6 days and every lesson was an adventure. I worked with 4 different instructors and each one has a slightly different way of teaching so I got an excellent mix of techniques and tips and tricks. They are very serious about safety and I felt like I was in very competent hands at all times.
Flying solo after all my lessons was just amazing. No way to explain the rush! Can't wait to go back to get my HANG2 and really be able to soar.
My wife enjoyed her beginner's lesson so much, she did a second one a few days later. Overall this was one of the best things I have ever done in all my travels and I cannot overstate just how great these people are. I highly recommend Kitty Hawk Hang Gliding School! And PLEASE don't forget to tip your...
