This trail is one of the true gems, in central Jersey. It starts around the border of New Brunswick and Franklin Township, goes all the way up along the eastern border of Franklin, then along the eastern border of South Bound Brook, then back along the northern border of Franklin, then touches the southeastern tip of Manville, then all the way down the western border of Franklin and on into Princeton. The whole time it is along the edge of the canal, and between the canal and a river (first the Raritan, then the Millstone River, one of the tributaries of the Raritan). And it stretches (not retches) along for TWENTY MILES, through some of the most scenic and beautiful areas left, in central Jersey, frequently even isolated wooded areas (sooo nice). Maybe you don't like walking or biking for long distances, but I do, and I can hardly think of a better place-around here-in which to do it (perhaps Washington Valley Park, but that requires a car to get to it often, and I don't have one anymore). And this Trail is so accessible from so many parts of central Jersey, and you don't have to walk all of it, just the part nearest to where you are (think of it like a beautiful, 20-mile-long park--although somewhat narrow). I give it 5 stars (maybe 10),...

Closed due to some construction that seems to have been going on for ages. I didn’t know and took the NJ transit train since I thought the trailhead will be so close to the station. The area around the trailhead is very unsafe to walk in (George street I believe) due to the lack of sidewalks, there isn’t even a shoulder and cars are zooming by at high speed.

Upon seeing the closed trail I hated to waste the day and decide to walk over to the next entrance…which took me about 45 minutes on no sidewalk and then on a stroad. This was really Not Just Bikes worthy. Really depressing and irritating if you don’t like loud noises.

When I finally got to the trail, it was beautiful and peaceful but not for very long. Car noises, obnoxious train noises, grass mower noises, weird unidentifiable noises…Around bound brook everything started to seem a bit sketchy due to some shady characters lurking around. No restrooms anywhere, no picnic tables to sit and rest your legs and have a snack. Anyway…

My verdict is this would be good for a long bike ride. I wouldn’t recommend this for walking. Maybe running...

First time back at the New Brunswick entrance in about 6 years. I don't remember it being so beat up with holes, it was a very rough ride and today just happened to be muddy. Also, I remember the swarms of gnats you run into while riding and its one of the downsides to riding here. By the time you stop, you have hundreds and hundreds all over you. They get in your eyes(I had glasses on) mouth, and nose and it's just not fun. I ended up riding through the park instead after only spending 30 min on the trail. I'm wondering if the other spots are the same way with the swarms of bugs and potholes. The restrooms here were not open yet but they were open by where the...

Great place to visit and take daily hikes with the kids. Very even easy trails and a variety of Reptiles to view. I have found 2 snake pits containing Great Northern Banded Water snakes and Eastern Ribbon and Eastern Garter snakes. There are approximately ten types of turtles you can find basking in the sunlight too. Most people don't know that the canal runs for 77 miles into Philadelphia built by Irish immigrants in 1836 because ships couldn't get up the Raritan river past landing lane bridge at low tide.any people have been buried alongside canal, but there are no headstone to see

One of the best classic trails in central NJ. I’ve walked, jogged, and bike rode here. This trail is ideal for biking since after bound brook it’s mostly all flat. Also, you can see all sorts of tiny critters and wildlife. Would give a 5/5 however if you leave from Somerset here are some things to keep in mind. -crowded during normal hours -the path initially has several rock parks and depending on your bike you made need to walk instead -beware of the ticks!
