This isn't just a zoo. It's really a huge park that happens to have a zoo in it. This is a whole day excursion, so plan to be there from open to close. You still probably won't see it all due to its size.
It's hard to pick out highlights, because there's so many great attractions (and super cute animals) to see. Don't miss the sea lions. Right now they have a few pups who are still nursing and learning to swim. The monorail is a fun experience, and I like that they have it set up so every seat is a good seat. At the end of the monorail ride you'll probably get to see their adorable red panda named Linus taking a nap in a tree.
Wear good walking shoes and make sure you're hydrated, but even if you get a little tired there's always the shuttle to transport you to any corner of the zoo. Also I would suggest getting the 'total experience' tickets, since otherwise you will end up paying a lot extra on many of the attractions (things the monorail, gorilla exhibit , children's zoo and others will cost additional fees).
