Updated Review. My original review was for 3 stars and that was close to a year ago. Iām back to update my review. I said in my original one that Iād love to give this Y a higher rating if they changed their hours for the better. And they did. Still not the best hours by any means but Iām a man of my word. They now close at 9:30 PM on weeknights and 6 PM on weekends. Woohoo? I wouldāve much rather they opened earlier in the morning but beggars canāt be chooserās. Iād like to shoutout the employees that work in the weight room. They are all very nice and all of them are very eager to lend a spot or give advice on form or their educated opinions on which exercises are better than others, etc, etc. They are all gentlemen. Chris, Lee, Arseniy, Tallat, and Ziggy. And thereās a new gentleman but I didnāt get his name yet. Shoutouts to all of them. And the other reason Iām giving this Y a higher rating is because of what Iāve witnessed from being a member here for more than a year now. This place is a real pillar in the Coney Island community and itās a pleasure to see. From the food drives to the āBook Bodegaā events to the summer camps and all of the other events they hold. Now on to my grievances; some that the Y can fix and some they canāt. The weight room is still way too hot temperature wise. Itās cooler than the summer temps outside but not by much. I cut my workout shorter than usual today because of how fatigued I felt from how hot it is in there. Thatās dangerous and unacceptable. The menās locker room bathroom faucets are also way too warm. That locker room also gets disgustingly warm. You would think youāre in the sauna sometimes when youāre in there. Those are the grievances the Y can do something about. The grievances I have that they canāt do anything about are these. Some of these members are absolutely disgusting human beings. The horrific hygiene I have unfortunately encountered is mind blowing. Members eating full meals in the locker room. Members trimming their pubes in the bathroom sinks. Members that wear the same clothes 3 days in a row without washing them. You smell like something I never even knew could exist and something I canāt even really describe or put into words. Itās awful. Put on some freakin deodorant before you leave your home, too. And these arenāt young kids Iām talking about, which might be a valid excuse for the behavior. No, these are grown men. I shouldnāt have to stop my set midway through to go gag in the corner. And most of them never wipe down the equipment after theyāre done using it. No proper gym etiquette whatsoever. Sad, really. Rant over. Open the gym earlier in the morning and Iāll come back for a third time and change this review from 4 stars to 5 stars....
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI been taking a group fitness classes at this gym for long time Recently they installed 2 huge extra fans from both sides I just donāt know what for ? the air conditioning in class is pretty strong and class is tiny No one even using it Except YMCA director she is joining the classes sometimes and itās only her who turning it on I never saw anyone else been using it We asked her to not turn it on because itās cold and we are sweating We donāt want to get sick She said Iām a YMCA director so Iām gonna do whatever I want So you donāt like it leave Hello We are customers and you are worker You should always need to do what customers want !!! Itās good for the business But yes you are not the owner you are just director :( A lot of people donāt like it and doesnāt want those extra fans working Maybe only very big people or females with menopause in progress donāt mind it lol but other people doesnāt want it they just donāt say anything because donāt want conflict with ymca director lol or just beingš š Dear Director if you turn the fans once in a while when we doing intensive exercises jumping and running thatās be Ok but not when everyone is sweating in the end of class and go lay on the floor to do abs or stretching Thatās definitely NOT OK Itās same like you been sweating at the gym and right after your workout went outside in cold on January or February And got cold sick š¤ right after š Also Locker room are always watery from the pool, you can easily slip and kill yourself. Ā Ā Ā Read moreI drive from Sunset Park to swim in this lap pool. There is $5 parking next door and it's worth it. They have a play pool for classes and kids, and a lap pool for lap swimming which is almost always open, so I often get the whole lane (or even the whole pool!) to myself. The other swimmers are very slow compared to most New York pools (no offense to them, it's just not a triathlete paradise), so I am usually the fastest swimmer, and I swim very slowly myself - I was almost the slowest person on my old NYC master's team and I swim in the slow medium late at the Prospect Y. I have not had trouble splitting the lane or getting my own lane, and only had to circle swim once for about five minutes in the past year and a half.
The gym area itself is large, sunlit, clean and uncrowded; a nice place to work out. There are beautiful rooms with mirrors and wood floors for yoga and classes. It seems most of the people there are either young up and coming Coney Island natives in glamorous new neon sneakers, or old grannies who speak to each other in their mother tongue (mostly Chinese or Russian languages, to my ears), but there are some middle aged Brooklynites there like myself. Everyone seems nice, you don't catch attitude there from your co-members. I hear there are children on the weekends.
As far as the facilities and staff are concerned, they are very new and friendly, however, they are still getting the kinks worked out so you will often encounter problems such as, no shelves in the shower, no female janitor so floors not mopped in women's locker room today, zumba teacher is late to class, pool not heated today, lifeguards don't know how to manage swim lane fights, etc.
No Towels.
Compared to the prospect YMCA this place is an emerald palace of calm, and the beach is just a block...
