This National Memorial somehow seems to fly under the radar in NYC. I guess that is what happens when a city is so full of things to do. This is one of my favorite spots to bring visitors because it is in a great area (close to the Hudson River, parks, and Columbia University) that isn't as congested with locals or tourists. Every time we have been here there have only been a handful of people. The exterior of the memorial is quite impressive and the interior is beautiful as well. The actual sarcophagi are downstairs in a dimly lit area that actually seems understated. There is just enough Civil War/U.S. Grant historical information provided to whet your appetite; of course, these topics are far too big to be completely addressed in one memorial. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the open hours are a bit weird (perhaps because of budget cuts?). I recommend checking hours of operation in advance. There have been times when we happened to go there but weren't...
Read moreLived in NYC for many years, had never visited this site until today. The mausoleum is impressive, an amazing building with murals and sculptures inside (as well as Grant and his wife Julia). Free. The area is quiet, Riverside Park is quite lovely, but there isn’t much to see besides the memorial. There is a Visitors Center across the street. It holds small displays with a few memorabilia of the time. A video can also be viewed. There’s a store with books and other small items (patches, pins, etc.). Clean, accessible bathrooms. While the visitors center is accessible ♿️ the memorial itself is not. The site is also short staffed, with the visitor center closed during lunch time. If the visitor center is closed, the nearest bathroom is behind the monument, at the children’s playground. It was surprisingly safe and clean for a city park bathroom. It also was well populated with children...
Read moreThe General Grant National Memorial left an indelible mark on me. This towering tribute to Ulysses S. Grant is a testament to his significance in American history. The majestic mausoleum that is larger than any presidential gravesite that I have been to, surrounded by Riverside Park's peaceful setting, creates a reflective and contemplative atmosphere. The interior's intricate design and solemnity pay fitting homage to Grant's role as a military leader and president. Exploring the exhibits and learning about his life provided a deeper understanding of his impact on the nation. If you're interested in history, leadership, or simply seeking a place of quiet reverence, the General Grant National Memorial is a moving experience that offers insight and...
