I have been visiting the Om Sai Mandir since 2004, when I was still a high schooler. Although Baba's teachings tell us to try and relieve ourselves of attachment, I have an inevitable attachment to the Mandir that I cannot deny, as I "grew" up there. And of course, once Baba holds your hand, He doesn't let go, so leaving the warm fold of the Mandir is not an option. It wasn't an option even when I moved beyond state borders. I started coming to the Mandir because my dance classes used to be held in the Mandir basement. That itself is a great story, but briefly, I had a skeletal condition that required back surgery when I was young. I went through a time where I didn't even know if I would be able to dance again. Of course, it is Baba's blessing, that I did resume dancing, and that too, for the first time again, years later, where else, but in Baba's Mandir. Initially, I respected Baba because my Mother was a believer and I found no reason to doubt her belief. I bowed my head, closed my eyes, and folded my hands in prayer, out of respect. For a young teenager, I used to think, what's one more God - the more the better! :) I used to fondly refer to Him as the "Grandfather God" in my mother tongue, Malayalam (I was initially exposed to Shirdi Baba). I was a little more skeptical of Satya Sai Baba, because like so many other people, it was difficult for me to initially comprehend the concept of a living God. But then I went to college, and one of my close friends there had been to Puttaparthi several times, and we spoke a great deal, and the rest is history. My story is like so many others', but Baba always makes each and every one of us feel special. The road to Baba is always unique. As a family, we've had inexplicable experiences at and relating to Baba and the Mandir, that have only served to deepen our faith. There is a great energy that one cannot deny is present at the Mandir, one that penetrates us and our lives. It protects us, and leaves a lasting impact. It would be a gross understatement to say that the Mandir has played a significant role in every important and beautiful event in my life since I first stepped foot there - from my college admission, my first job, the prevention of a major accident involving my mother, to the most recent, my marriage, and by Baba's grace, many more beautiful events to come. The Mandir provides a soul-nourishing environment that is invaluable to not just me, but the entire community. I have also felt that the Mandir family has always been my own. I feel blessed and honored that I have been able to relinquish everything that the Mandir has to offer, for this long, and I feel sad that I didn't come under this fold sooner, and only pray that I, and my family and friends, are able to continue to bask in Baba's love, which the Mandir embodies. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to see Baba in person when He was in his human form. But by Baba's grace, the Mandir has always, continues, and will continue, to bridge this...
