My late husband retired after 24 years active duty. We used to stop into airport USO lounges while traveling. Today when I stopped in, a volunteer told me that the USO is only for active duty. I didn’t see any other visitors in the lounge and have never been told that the USO at any airport location is only for active duty. I just traveled last weekend and visited the USO in Denver and the volunteers were very welcoming. Today, although the volunteer told me I was ineligible, she did allow me to get a water bottle and a granola bar, but I did not feel welcomed and left immediately. After leaving, I researched the rules for using the airport USO locations, and every site I saw welcomes active duty and families as well as retirees and families as long as they are not overly crowded. I’m not sure if today’s volunteer has incorrect information or if the USO policy has changed, yet is not published. Even the website and fb page for the Newark airport do not exclude retirees and their families. This USO is clean and...
Read moreI recently stopped in on a layover in Newark and was told that although I was a disabled veteran I would not be allowed in to the Uso. I understand it is the policy to serve active duty members and Families First but there were only two other service members in there. I left upset and a family member called to complain and was told by Susan that I have been trying to use my ID to get in there all week. The fact is I just landed from Denver Colorado and have never been to that Uso. I appreciate the volunteers who work and share their time with veterans and their families but Susan was very rude and dishonest with my family member who contacted her. Susan also stated that she needed to ensure the safety of the other veterans in there and that was the other reason I was not allowed in. It breaks my heart that the thought of another veteran being in a room with them presented some sort of danger. I will be taking the higher up the chain to ensure that veterans are respected regardless of...
