Newport Beach Civic Center Park — Attraction in Newport Beach

JUN 2022... ALL new sculptures for phase VI and VII combined are installed!!! Meant as a rotating outside sculpture garden you can walk through. Assuming covid put the kibash on phase VI. So both phases, a full 20 sculptures are installed now (see photos). Multi leveled mild elevations with two paths; 0.5mi (0.8km) and a longer 1mi (1.6km). There are stairs to the S-curve bench. The bench is kind of a dead end however. There are now ample top down "you are here" map signs. The park is coastal riparian in a small bisecting valley. Many examples of chaparral flora and zero-scaping with some broad flower beds. There is s lot of bird life close to the small valleys. In large strokes the park is in between Avocado and Mac Arthur Blvd. The north street boundry at San Miguel has a stairs or elevator access footbridge north over the Blvd. Or go south at the top to a dead end 30ft (9.14M) in the air. Great views of the park and the whole area towards the beach are to be had up top here. The park continues north and access is intended over the crossing footbridge. Your other option is to cross by foot San Miguel at Avocado. Not recommended high volume and many cars like to turn right here from Avocado. At park northside, a combined Torry pine mini forest and some seating end at a dog park. For sculptures there are 3 to be seen in the park area north of San Miguel. The main park is south of San Miguel. Besides the sculptures in the south area; there is a huge S curve table by Mac Arthur, a big bunny and the informally named BunnyHenge by Avocado Street. A little north by the elevator is a permanent standing sculpture of a local man. He seems a bit out of place but keeps the elevator company. Besides visuals, the scents and oils of the plants give off a pleasant scent from the sun. For those curious there are info plaques about the flora and fauna also. TIP - One downside parking is at the Civic Center and common bathrooms are a short hike back to the civic center or 2nd floor library. Its not too strenuous to park in library main parking and start walking down the east (Mac Arthur) side of the library. Then continue north by the green grass area through the civic building area. When the grass ends the sculpture park begins with a flagpole and three flags. Enjoy the butterflys on the hillside, the 1st sculpture. TIP - More information online at Newport Beach website. Local vegetation on display and on schedule with drought tolerant determination! Coastal sage, scrub brush and chaparral add to the natural landscape of this park. I like to take a bag lunch here to enjoy at one of the many picnic tables. There’s park benches and pathways to go for meetings between friends, quiet reflection and meditation. The park is open space land, with the sun exposure being a consideration for those with skin concerns. Better to take precautions when spending any amount of time here! There’s no public restrooms in the immediate park area, tho the nearest restrooms available are in the front of the City Hall, to the Avocado Street side.
