Smelt Sands is my favorite place to stop when traveling along the Oregon coast. Some perks include -- picnic bench with a beautiful view, garbage cans and men/women's restrooms with flush toilets and running water for hand washing.
The best part, in my opinion, is that the sand in this small area is instead, small gravel, made up of diverse stones and pieces of shells. In high winds, this is a place where you can still enjoy the waves without being sand blasted! Our kids loved burying themselves in those tiny rocks and spent hours trying to pick out tiny agates and the like.
While I would not recommend this location for rock hounds, I have been known to bring home a bit of gravel to top off plants and use for art projects.
Another bonus is that at high tide the large boulders that surround the area create gorgeous sprays and crashing sounds as the waves come in.
Truly a treasured spot...
Read moreSmelt Sands is a truly beautiful experience. Access from the parking lot is an easy handicap entrance and very wheelchair accessible. Provides also is a large table facing the ocean if a packed lunch should happen to be on your list. The 804 trail facing your right side along the ocean is an easy scenic walk with outstanding "Tree Cave" like walk throughs along the path as my pictures show. There are large open beach view photo opportunities. The area is spot clean and shows the pride taken by it's Oregon residents. Dog's are wecomed but must be leashed and always carrying your doggy bag is a must. My review is to start the trail entrance just before you enter the town of Yachats coming from Waldport it is close to the Adobe Lodge location. From the parking lot to the beach area take the 804 trail on your right side for the most worthwhile views. Absolutely a 5 Star...
Read moreAfter hours and hours of quite literally scrolling down the coast on Google maps looking for rocks in the ocean, I came across this spot located near seal rock state park that seemed less busy and full of potential for my first solo photography trip.
I arrived near sunset, and was not disappointed! If you're into photography, this spot has endless potential. If you're looking for an elopement spot, there are memories to be made. And if you're just looking to spend hours watching waves crash up against the rocks, there are a dozen amazing choices here all in one place for you to feast your eyes on.
If youre taking a trip up or down HWY 101, take a few minutes to pop in here. A short walk to the beach, plenty of shelter from wind, and photo...
