This was a really cool site, definitely a spot to stop and check out. My friends and I (we’re in our 20s) had no problem navigating the caves by climbing down through the holes in the cave roof or swimming in through the front.
You HAVE to go at low tide and bring water proof shoes. The rocks can be really sharp, you will likely cut your feet if you’re bare foot. I was able to walk barefoot and not have an issue.
There are two ways to get into the cave. You can walk down to the mouth of the cave and swim in. It’s really cool and it looks just like something out of a mermaid movie. Just make sure you hit the tide right and watch to make sure the current isn’t too strong. We went at the end of low tide and it started getting a little sketchy as the tide came in. The waves coming into the cave were getting larger and more powerful as we left.
The second way is to lower yourself through a hole in the ceiling of the cave onto the beach beneath. Someone had made a little rock pile that made the process easier. You’ll have to pull yourself up and out of the cave to leave. It requires some upper body strength, it was basically a mini rock climb.
The rocks inside are not as sharp as the rocks on top of the cave. Just be careful, watch your head and...
Read moreMermaid Caves is almost a secret place hidden in the middle of nowhere, right in front of a private property. I did the research before I go and even my friend who live in Hawaii never come to this cave. You have to find the entrance that is not noticeable. Luckily my friends and I met some local and they point it out for us. The hole to get down is very small and when I got there the water had coming up if you get there in the morning it should be better, and we can go deeper to the cave but in the afternoon, it is too dangerous to deal with the wave. Even that inside the cave is very beautiful with reflection of the sun and water to the ceiling of the cave. WARNING! you shouldn't go alone. It must be group of friends to go together for a safety purpose unless you can't clam up and someone can help you. Since I try to visit a site of nature, it is something need to be considered, some place and be dangerous and must have...
Read moreI absolutely loved this place. It is a totally underrated spot in western O'ahu. The cave has openings from the top (rocks) and from the water. You want to swim there, you have to be very careful with the wave as they can crush you to the rocks and injure you very easily. It is easier to get there from the opening from the rocks. It is a bit hard to find it but I uploaded a few pictures to help. The cave itself is amazing. It is beautiful and very clean. It is also much cooler than the beach itself so if it is hot out there, this is even a better place. You have to be careful with the cave when you get there since it can be overwhelming when the tide is up. The best time to go there is probably from 9am to 2pm during the day when the qater level is still low. I would definitely recommend taking the time to visit this cave and have a camera and your swimsuit to swim in the...
