The worst campground I ever tried, across twenty states and in Africa. Essentially a parking lot beside a busy highway. Don’t expect to sleep if you stay here. Hawaiians spread out like banana peels when they camp, with generators, disco lights, and loud stereos booming competing Hawaiian reggae-style-pop-music-remixes from each campsite village. Noise from the highway traffic drowns out most of that, at this particular park, though the headlights and booming car stereos driving through the parking lot at 03:30 still get your attention. Headlights from highway traffic, as well as from the parking lot, shine through tent walls all night. There are no picnic tables at most of the campsites. There were three at one, none at the others. We had campsite 10. That might be the worst site. As anywhere you go on Oahu, there are homeless people everywhere. If you ever wanted to try homelessness, or just live in a homeless camp near an obnoxious party and a noisy highway, this is the place to do it. The sunset is beautiful. The beach is nice enough. The restrooms are filthy and reek of urine. At least the dogs didn’t bite my wife, as happened to one other camper. I estimate that I got one hour of sleep, in six, ten-minute increments. Also, the road is “coned off”, at times, with traffic cones preventing left turns from the highway in either direction. If this happens, count your blessings and drive past, and you won’t regret staying there, like I do. It was awful, and I can put up with a lot, smiling. I pulled down my tent, shook the dirt off my feet, crumbled up my camping permit, and left as soon as there was any other place to go. You would have a better camping experience on a...
Read moreUnfortunately the locals are not very open to visitors @ this park apparently, so go with caution if you do. The setting is nice, but my wife was attacked by a dog that broke away from one of the locals pop up camp areas and chased her, then bit her ankle during our visit. The local family never offered to assist my wife after their dog attacked her, then when the life guard went back with my son to ask about the dogs current vaccine records, they acted like they never had a dog, but eventually confessed up to the incident. "they loaded the dog and left right after it bit her, when we went to find the life guard" Even after confessing to their dog bitting my wife, they still didn't apologize, or offer to assist in her bills for fixing the bite. Pretty sad actually, but the we are family vibe they are selling while taking and enjoying all the tourists money in Oahu, really is just an...
