Read moreI’ve been playing golf for more than half my life which means I’ve played at all kinds of courses. The Palmer course is well maintained except for the bunkers which felt like hitting in wet concrete. There was very little sand which I somewhat expected since the rain would make it somewhat compact. If you’re expecting plenty of ocean views, don’t come here. Only hole 17 has an ocean view at the green. You won’t see it on the approach shot or off the tee. The practice facilities are great. There’s range balls ready to hit on nice level grass and a decently sized short game area. Again the practice bunker had very little sand. Expect high winds and a 4 1/2 hour round. Out of 10, I would rate the course itself as a 7.
The main reason I give this review a 3/5 is the service. DO NOT MAKE A TEE TIME LATER THAN NOON. We started at 1:00pm and by 3pm, the snack cart no longer comes around. On top of that, the water station at hole 5 was not working. I dumped my bottle assuming I would be able to refill with some chilled water, so I went without water for the next 9 holes until 14. On 13, I was getting heat stroke and ended up calling the phone number connected through Google Maps to see if the snack cart was coming around so I could buy a bottle of water. When I got off hold, Elena said that the pro shop was not in operation at 4:30pm and that’s when I found out the snack cart ended at 3pm. I asked Elena to see if someone could bring some water out since everyone in my group was getting dehydrated, but then she just hung up on me. I called back and was put on hold again until I found a working water dispenser on 14. When I got to the clubhouse I saw the pro shop was actually still open which deeply frustrated me. All of my grievances never would have happened if we teed off earlier than noon. Would’ve been...
Read moreYou’d be insane to choose this course over Ko Olina right now. For the same price, everything about Turtle Bay is worse, and $240 left me feeling taken advantage of.
No range balls for the early tee times, for no apparent reason. You drive through 7 minutes of construction in a standard golf cart to get to a poorly kept practice area. We were told our included range balls would be waiting for us but nothing was there, and the pro shop wouldn’t answer their phone. Since the course was so far from the pro shop we just gave up without hitting.
The greens were mostly nice and were easily the best part of the course. The fairways were in decent condition but nowhere near as green as the photos I saw when researching. We initially thought we were at the wrong course because it looked so different. A few too many times I had to kick my ball into a green part of the fairway. Bunkers are thin and packed with clay? sand, and many of their edges were unkept.
The course layout is pretty fun and forgiving. There are some cool views, but many times those views were lessened by the construction and chain link fences around the holes. The staff were very friendly.
I perhaps went in with too high of expectations, but I do not see how it got the rank of “Best Course on O’ahu“ that many sites touted. Having just played Ko Olina, everything about our time here felt lesser and I don’t understand how conditions can vary so drastically.
In its current condition, Turtle Bay Palmer was a fun course but did not feel like the premium experience that you can get elsewhere, and I do not think it warranted that price tag. I hope the work they’re doing and the money they’re making from charging full price yields a better course...
