My husband and I stayed at the Turtle Bay Resort for our honeymoon and wanted to have one special dinner on our last night in Hawaii and we chose Beach House as it was said to be the nicest option. We made a reservation on a Friday night when it was understandably very busy. We were given a nice table overlooking the ocean and our server was personable, funny and knowledgeable - although the high volume of customers made our experience feel like part of a tourist machine churning out as many tables as possible rather than a special, unique dining experience that we hoped for the final night of our honeymoon. My husband had pre-ordered a special champagne prior to our visit to have with our dinner (~$200 bottle) which I had to get up and pour myself twice because our poor waiter was so overloaded with other tables. We absolutely would have ordered a wine pairing with our meal if we had the opportunity, but no one came to speak with us even though we asked for a wine list before the food started coming out.
Food wise, everything was tasty for sure, but at their price point, a little disappointing. It felt very “Vegas-y” in terms of quality, cost and presentation more than something uniquely culinary that justified the cost.
To start, we ordered the goat cheese dip which was delicious, served with small Hawaiian buns. We also got the sizzling beef tobanyaki - also very good.
Our second course was the spiced ahi tatami, a spice crusted raw ahi sliced over this soy mustard butter sauce which was quite rich, as well as an ahi kanpachi roll (we loved this).
Our entree to share was the “seafood trio” (scallops, fresh catch and prawns) which we obviously had very high hopes for and felt this was the hugest disappointment of the evening - at a whopping $71, we received one scallop and prawn each - and the fresh catch of the day was a very small piece of mahi mahi, accompanied by fresh asparagus from their local farm and an ice cream scoop portion of “truffle crab” mashed potatoes. Everything was absolutely drenched in uni butter which made the dish extremely rich. This was supposed to be the star of the show for us - at this price point, we expected more than one prawn/scallop and bite of fish each. The sides were bland and unmemorable. It all felt very “thrown together”, small and sad. See photo attached for reference (I took this after we ate the two scallops!)
For dessert, we ordered a special banana cake and they also brought us a special dessert to commemorate our honeymoon. We appreciated the thoughtful touches for sure.
Overall, if I had other restaurants to choose from, I would not recommend this one for the price point and what we ultimately experienced and ate. We acknowledge that staying at a resort means they have an absolute chokehold on what guests can choose from to eat, but we did walk away feeling a bit scammed.
Perhaps if Roy Yamaguchi himself had prepared our meal, it would have been a different experience. Our bill was ~$500 including tip and I couldn’t help but feel we were just two of hundreds of customers squeezed into a high turnover dining experience eating very highly priced food of sub par quality, served in small portions and drenched in rich,...
Read moreWe had never been to the Ritz Carlton property at Turtle Bay, came hoping to catch turtles coming in at sunset. The staff at the beach house were very gentle and honest with the answer that turtles rarely come ashore here anymore, probably due to the high density of guests. So instead we decided to sit for a while and enjoy the sun going down, and the waves crashing on the breakers, and the palm trees swinging in the breeze...with a drink at the bar of Roy Yamaguchi's Beach House.
I ordered the spicy mai tai and my friend her zero proof tropical delight a.k.a. POG passionfruit orange juice and guava drink. The drinks were superb. We decided to order the beet and burrata salad and the calamari to nosh.
We were presented with some deliciously seasoned edamame while we waited for our appetizers. We were also offered hand wipes which were wonderful given the time we had spent in salty water today.
The Beet and Barada salad arrived perfectly crisp and was incredibly delicious. Unfortunately our calamari arrived cold. That was unexpected, but given it was actually cold, not even warm, decided given that we would simply return it, and call it a night. Our drinks had delicious and the salad had been tasty with a tangy, refreshingly dressing and the beets prepared perfectly.
Our server/bartender Makani, who was very professional and made an excellent mai tai, was clearly apologetic. We had requested the tab to head out, when within maybe three minutes a hot sizzling dish of beef tobinyaki arrived with a warm bowl of rice.
It was a complete surprise and turned out to be an utterly delightful substitute. The complementary replacement for the calamari was both time sensitive, and exceptionally well-made.
We thoroughly enjoyed taking several minutes to inhale the delicious dish before completing our tab. The experience was such a good recovery that we asked to speak with a manager. As it turned out the GM Keith was on the other side of the bar checking in so we were able to take a few minutes with him to report our outstanding customer service experience. With humility and professionalism he apologized for the delayed dish just as Makani had. His concern for excellent Customer Service was clearly evident.
I can tell you that dish was excellent but more importantly the customer service at this restaurant/bar easily serving 120 customers was exceptional for the two of us.
Also during our time there a party with someone who had a physical disability arrived and that client was treated with the same courtesy in regard as everyone else. It's wonderful when the facility is accessible for persons with disabilities something that matters to me significantly.
I highly recommend this beachside bar experience if you are on Oahu and come to the North Shore. It's worth taking a moment to sit at the bar and enjoy the wildness of the ocean at a distance while receiving exceptional customer service.
I think this is the caliber of Hospitality that epitomizes Hawaiian graciousness and the spirit of aloha. Mahalo to Roy Yamaguchi and Ritz Carlton for having exceptional staff like Makani, and for hosting such an excellent facility on the North...
Read moreThe food is good, staff could use a refresher training course. My fiance and I decided to go to Roy's Beach House after preparing all day for our wedding the next day. We were greeted and congratulated by our waitress who sat us down quickly. Keep in mind they close at 10 and our ride didn't grab us till 920. They were awesome enough to ensure us that we'd be okay to still have our dinner there. We got seated and they did there thing we ordered the misoyaki butter fish and the mac nut crusted mahi mahi. The food came out warm and fast. We really enojyed the butter fish. The miso was so good. The mahi mahi was cooked perfectly. We ordered the chocolate souffle for dessert if you love chocolate you'll love this! Overall our meal was adequate. The only complaints I would have was from the staff. Although our waitress was doing a good job. I did feel being a local that I was less waited or paid attention too. There was a lady I was guessing to be a manager on shift that greeted and went to every table asking how things were going, but not ours. Like every single one, even the couple next to us. But not one word toward us. As we were paying we asked the waitress if we could call for a ride back to our cottage she politely told us to ask the gentleman in the front to ring the front desk. So we ask the man in front if he could call the front desk for a ride back to our cottage he looks at us blankly and says I dont know where the phone is and to ask the bartender if he could call from the bar. So we walk to the back where the bar is and it's not that busy but there were ppl having drinks. I stood there while my wife struggled to get his attention and when she did, he approached in the most rudest of ways. Looking at her saying very snarky and with attitude say's "can I help you with something?". She then continued to ask if he could call for a ride from the front desk. He then looks at my wife and says "Go ask the girl in the front." And continued doing what he was doing. It took alot for me to watch someone speak and treat my wife that way for no good reason. I had walked back to our waitress and told her that we're being bounced around and no one was helping!they still couldn't find the phone so She used her personal phone and was able to get ahold of the front desk. I thank you for that! You saved our night from being ruined by your coworkers. So that was my first experience here. But I am staying in the beach cottages so i just ended up just ordering food to go the next time I ate from there. Food is still good enough...
