For a dam, there's a surprising amount of recreation here. There are shelters with grills and a trail that takes you to the top of the dam. From here you can hike along the dam ridge line or hike over to the drone airfield/runway. It's a nice place to picknic if you're not going to the beach with ample parking. Also check out the myriad of hiking trails around the lake. The map that odnr posts is missing a lot of useful details. If you're hiking, download the free alltrails app and you can find the trails that go all the way around the lake easily, including bike trails and bridle trails. There are parking areas all along the perimeter that aren't shown on the map. There's also a better map on the wall of the ranger station, I wish they would post this. Finally, there is a large beach that is best accessed via a separate entrance. It has ample parking...
Read moreStopped by the visitor center to learn the history of the Alum Creek Dam that was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1970's. It was interesting to learn how this dam and the other dams in the area all combine to work together and water management and flood control. The dam is about 1 1/4 miles long from end to end. We walked from the visitor center to the actual dam. The views of the lake are fantastic. I really liked looking down from the dam at the spillway and watching the water flow down! It is a dam, so no shade and no where to sit along the dam. But there are shaded trails at the end. There is a parking lot at the end of the dam or you can park at the visitor center and walk 1/4 mile to the start of the dam. It was a very hot day when we visited, so the dam was a great place to...
Read moreAbsolutely beautiful park. A huge dam that is fun to play on the side of, especially in the snow. The lake is beautiful frozen and looks like it would be a great time in the summer. There is a decent length, paved, walking path at the peak of the damn. We visited to see some beautiful birds, one of which was a Bald Eagle. We were not disappointed.
There's walking paths, flowing water, lake, waterpark(saw a sign, not the actual waterpark), walking trails, hill for sledding, mountain bike trail and play ground for kids.
Not much shade on the playground / rec area of the dam though so be aware for hotter months. Right now the restrooms are not open, they have 3 portalets and they are absolutely FOUL. Make sure you don't need to potty when you get there, no facilities and no where...
