In terms of view and access to area restaurants, this marina can't be beat. Located just inside the breakwater from the Neuse and adjacent to the high rise bridge (45' clearance) over Smith Creek, this marina is in the heart of the old Village. Two of the best restaurants and bars in town are in the same block - O'Town looks over the marina and harbor and M&M's is just around the corner. The Inland Waterway and Provision Company (marine chandlery) is a block away and The Bean (coffee shop) is two. As they say, "location, location, location". For 99% of the year, this is the best location for your boat if she's your home away from home and you visit Oriental regularly.
That other 1%? The marina is somewhat exposed to strong southerly winds. Your docklines will get well exercised during sustained blows from the south. When a named storm is within 48 hours, marina rules require all boats to leave the marina. Most owners just leave their boats there, some move them to anchor out in South River, about 10 miles SE, across the Neuse. Boats that fit under the 45' bridge are often anchored up Smith, Greens or Kershaw creeks.
But hey! If you put convenience and safety above enjoying life, you wouldn't even own a boat, much less go...
Read moreI recently spent 4 months at OHVM and I can say that the marina is reflection of the Oriental Spirit one of old time friendliness and service. The small town where everybody smiles, waves and says hello. Ceri Anne the dock mistress is the personification of that spirit. While there we had 2 tropical storms one directly on us. Ceri Anne organized the volunteers and all people and property were left basically unscathed. Don’t miss Sunday movie night ! Actually read the signal flags, it’ll get you a candy bar. Attend the Marina and town festivities they are regular and amazing. Hangout at the Bean in the morning the tiki bar or the town brewery in the evenings. Oriental is the kind of town that makes even the most ardent wanderer want to settle down. Oh! don’t forget to bring your pets they’re welcome everywhere and some of the biggest celebrities in town are a cat ( aero) and Spanky the lovable cuddly police pitbull both regularly seen at the Bean. Oriental where you can make great friends in short time . PS it’s rumored that one of The Beach Boys was a guest for several months.
Thanks OHVM, Ceri Anne, and the people of Oriental truly one of the great memories of this world traveler...
Read moreGreat location in town. Not well protected from the SW. Mainly just a problem for ‘A’ Dock. Docks are fixed, as the “tide” is about a 1-1.5’ wind tide. You have to be careful when tying lines to account for this. Clean restrooms and showers. No pump out, but there is a town maintained one 1000 yds away at the Town Dock. WiFi is decent. Usually can find a cart quickly to move things on/off the boat. Dock master Mark is a helpful and nice guy. Oriental is a definite...
