Looks great on social media; that’s about it. I’ve been coming to this gym for nearly three, maybe four years now. This place isn’t bad, I think most people probably love coming here to workout, but for myself it’s not really the case anymore. Over time, small changes were being made throughout the gym that I didn’t like but dealt with. Towels and disinfecting spray bottles were replaced with dry, single-use wipes that do not disinfect the surface. Free to use cubbies, coat racks, and lockers were reduced to promote purchasing a locker. Whenever new equipment was purchased, it was always some new, unneeded machine instead of replacing the old equipment that has been around since the now-destroyed Palmerton hospital (older than the gym itself, even). A new outdoor section was added but contains equipment that isn’t indoors or equipment (I.e. abductor / adductor) that is split both outside and inside when they should be together. After switching to a mobile app to handle mobile entry, you now have to pay a $30 service fee to sign up for a recurring membership They no longer pause memberships, so you will need to repay the service fee every time you sign up again. College kids like myself can no longer pause to go back to school, they must cancel and repay the $30 service fee. The men’s locker room / bathroom situation upstairs is horrendous, and has barely been improved over my time here. Used to splurge money on an excessive amount of single-use seasonal decorations that did nothing to actually improve the gym, not sure if this still occurs. Membership pricing has increased over time, which is expected, but I would argue the changes made haven’t been worth the price increase. I doubt everyone has the same complaints as me, but these are just things that have come to mind over the last few years coming here. I did enjoy it, but after all the recent changes it is sad to see what this...
Read moreI am a former competitive bodybuilder and will be reviewing this gym on a few different criteria. First and foremost, for the normal person, the gym is 100% fine. It is clean, plenty of equipment and open 24/7.
If you are a competitive athlete, this gym has some pros and cons...
Pros - clean, lots of plates, a variety of equipment and specialty bars and attachments (however, some of the recent attachment purchases are of knock offs and not the original manufacturer - disappointing there). Very rarely is weight training or cardio equipment out of order. They have 3 step mills and 1 jacobs ladder, which is rare. They have plenty of dumbbells which are rarely stripped and often tight. Which is not always easy to find in a gym.
Cons - horrible air circulation in the summer. Even with all the fans going, the air is heavy and hard to breath. While there is a great variety of equipment, 95% of it is old. You will not find any Atlantis, Arsenal or Panetta cutting edge machines. It is mostly composed of old Body Masters, some Hammer Strength and a hodgepodge of misc manufacturers. The mono-lift is locked up and only available when front desk staff is available. So, it spends most of it's time being a really expensive bar rack. They moved some of the better pieces of equipment to the outside training area and they are getting destroyed by the weather. Also, walking around the place is like an obstacle course. Everything is tight. One of the reasons I go in the early am hours.
The gym has potential to be great if.... some (not all) of the equipment was updated, the air circulation in the summer was improved and if there was more square footage to spread out some of...
Read moreCaught a highly contagious skin condition TWICE from this gym in the past year. I appreciate the openness and the way this gym “welcomes everyone” but some people are extremely uncleanly and if you’re going to allow as much foot traffic as you do you should really disinfect equipment better or provide an actual disinfectant for people to use rather than a watered down cleaning solution. Sadly the only clean thing about this gym is the floors.
reply Just because you are known for your “cleanliness” according to gym goers that are clearly biased does not mean the case is such. You also very clearly have a recent review from 5 months ago stating cleanliness is “going downhill” and I couldn’t agree more. My dermatologist actually specifically stated I caught what I did from “improperly cleaned surfaces most likely at the gym due to sweat” esp since this irritation occurred immediately after leaving your facility so while I thank you for your concern I’m quite positive your gym is the source. Also I can’t imagine you would receive any other complaints considering it’s a rather embarrassing issue to report and they probably feel the same as I do hence my “anonymous” report so I’m glad I spoke up and had the courage to speak for others. I will be bringing my own disinfectant and towel from now on and will avoid using your multiple day old wet bacteria soaked towels and fabuloso cleaning solution. But again I really do appreciate...
