Stop & Shop — Attraction in Pawtucket

Today I went to my local stop and shop (Cottage St, Pawtucket) to cash my RI State Welfare check in the amount of $100. Before going, I read your check cashing policy (see below) which is posted on your website. While I do not have a S&S check cashing card, I do proper RI state picture ID. I figured I could apply for a S&S check cashing card and then cash my state check. I went to the customer service desk, and was waited on by Emily. I presented my check to her and asked her if I could cash my check there. She said no. I said but RI state government check. She then replied oh well yes you can. Do you have a check cashing card. I said no but I have a state issued ID. She called the store manager over and asked him. He said no I needed a check cashing card. I asked how do I get one. He said apply for one here. I asked could i cash my check today? He said no .. in three weeks.

I have two issues with this:

This - RI state welfare -  is my only income. This is a STATE check. I shouldnt have to wait three weeks to cash a state check with proper ID which I had. Additionally since I live literally around the corner I am in that store almost daily. It does NOT say on your website that it takes THREE weeks to get a S&S check cashing card. In fact, it says "To receive a Stop & Shop check cashing card, simply complete the application and provide two photo ID's including a driver's license or state photo ID card." This give the impression that I or anyone could then a cash a check at that time.

I figured that because S&S is right around the corner from me it would be very convenient. Guess I was wrong.

Check Cashing Policy How do I cash a check at Stop & Shop? To cash any kind of check, you will need a Stop & Shop card with check cashing privileges. To receive a Stop & Shop check cashing card, simply complete the application and provide two photo ID's including a driver's license or state photo ID card.

Personal Checks: Personal checks will be accepted at the checkout for the amount of the purchase and up to $30 over the amount of the order. Customers may cash three checks not to exceed $200 per day and five checks not to exceed $300 per week.

Payroll and Government Checks: Payroll and Government checks may be cashed only at the Service Desk. For your security, we require a photo ID plus your Stop & Shop check cashing card to cash these checks. The limit for these checks is $500 and one of each type may be cashed weekly. All payroll checks will be validated. A $1.00 check cashing fee is charged for all payroll and government checks.

Checks not accepted at Stop & Shop: We cannot accept predated checks, handwritten or handtyped payroll checks, two party (or more) personal checks, starter checks, money orders or welfare checks without a government...

Customer service is great. 6 times they had to come clear the scanner while I was checking out. The reason for the 1 star is recently they've switched the self checkouts with the conveyer belts, which I always assumed were for people with bigger shops that want that convenience. Now if you've got a full cart and reusable bags you almost can't use these. It took close to 30 minutes to check out because of a multitude of issues. Reusable bags don't fit in the area. Didn't know the scanning procedure had been changed. Scanning was frozen because it took too long. Had to wait for customer service. What is the point of the roller area if you can't scan continuously? That use to be a great place for reusable bags and scanned items. Literally can't use it. It's wasted space. You place something in your bag and the scanner doesn't recognize it. I put an entire rotisserie chicken into the bagging area and it didn't register. This happened with 4 other items. Had to wait for customer service each time. Needed another bag because mine were full. Put another bag in the bagging area. Couldn't continue scanning because it was an unregistered item that hadn't been scanned. Obviously can't scan my own bag! Had to wait for customer service. Weight limit acquired because I had dog food. Remove items. But not all of them! That's too many! Put items back in the bagging area. Can't scan. Had to wait for customer service. Was told once the weight was registered items could be moved up by customer service. Moved up items onto the rollers.... was told to put items back in the bagging area. Had to wait for customer service.

Dog food ended up on the floor. Items got crushed because I had to stack my 2 cases of soda and Gatorade on top of my bags because the freakin bagging area needed to register it and it's weight. For a once convenient and seamless experience it's an absolute sh*tshow now. You're basically making anyone with a large shop go to a cashier or use plastic bags. Which I refuse to do. It's supposed to be my choice. With the pandemic this last year I've limited my time in stores and exposure to people. Hence the self checkout. Today I got up close and personal with staff 6 times. Because of a scanning change. Even the guy behind me said it had been a nightmare for the last 2 weeks because of the change. Not sure what the point of it was. But it SUCKS.
