I had high hopes for this company based on their glowing reviews, but I’ve come to realize that the positive feedback isn’t for their buff and coat service. I originally consulted UB Hardwoods for a full sand and refinish to address chips, cracks, and stains in my 1940s hardwood floors. During the consultation, it was just me and the salesperson, Shawn. I made it clear I wanted a full restoration, but instead of listening to my needs, Shawn essentially mansplained to me what he thought should be done with my house and insisted on the buff and coat.
After the service left my floors looking essentially unchanged, we raised our concerns with the owner, Bob Miller. From the start of the conversation, Bob was rude and dismissive. My husband spoke with him on the phone, and Bob interrupted him early in the call to say he was Shawn’s uncle and that he was “taking his nephew’s side.” He dismissed our complaints as “he said, she said” and even accused us of trying to scam the company for free flooring, which was both insulting and unprofessional. Rather than treating us as paying customers with legitimate concerns, he made it clear that he wasn’t willing to listen.
As recourse, Bob offered to apply the $1,300 we had already paid toward the full sand and refinish- the service I requested in the first place. I no longer trust them to do further work in my home. Preparing for this service was extremely disruptive to our household. We had to take several days off work to clear all the furniture from the floors, plan PTO months in advance, and arrange childcare. Repeating this process for another service is not feasible, especially given how much time, effort, and disruption was involved.
The entire process was frustrating from start to finish:
• Misleading Promises: Shawn assured me the buff and coat would address all of my concerns, but after the consultation, I was told cracks and gaps couldn’t be filled. This directly contradicted what their website claims, which states that cracks, chips, and gaps can be repaired during refinishing.
• Minimal Results: The service was completed in less than 1.5 hours. We were told the workers would arrive between 8:00 and 11:00 AM, but they didn’t arrive until 11:03. They were out of my house by 12:23 PM, meaning they spent less than 90 minutes working on my floors. We spent more time waiting for them to arrive than they actually spent performing the work. Despite this, my floors still had the same chips, scratches, and stains as before. Guests in my home have asked when I plan to get the floors redone because they haven’t noticed any difference. For $1,300, I expected much more. • Suspicious Payment Practices: This is the most concerning part. UB Hardwoods requires the entire deposit to be paid via direct bank transfer upfront. Bob Miller himself admitted this is because many customers try to get their money back after being dissatisfied with the buff and coat service. Requiring a direct deposit means you can’t dispute the charge or request a refund through your credit card company. Essentially, you’re left with no recourse if the service is subpar, which it was in my case.
I want to emphasize to anyone reading this:
Do NOT pay the full deposit via direct bank transfer.
This policy is clearly designed to prevent dissatisfied customers from getting their money back for poor service. Bob even admitted this. If I had known this upfront, I would have reconsidered hiring this company entirely.
Please learn from my experience and be cautious when dealing with this company, especially if they pressure you to pay via direct deposit. I hope this review helps someone else avoid the frustration and heartbreak I’ve...
Read moreWe had them refinish the hardwood floors in our house and though the staff was friendly and willing to answer questions, overall we did not have a good experience with this company. First, they originally told us they were going to start on our floors on a Monday, so since we had to be at work that day we hid a key for them so they could get in and start working. However, when we got home that evening, nothing had been done and there was no sign of anyone having been there. Only after we reached out to them did they inform us the were running behind and that they would be there the next day instead. Then after they were done and the floors had time to cure we went into the rooms they did and all of the floors felt like they had only used 60 grit sandpaper on it. They were so rough that our socks would catch on the floor as you walked and you could hear it rasping if you ran your hand over it. We called and complained and they did come back to smooth and re-coat the floors for free which did help a lot, however we have noticed that they didn't bother to do this around the edges of the rooms by the walls so those areas are still rough and in the process they got stain on our walls. We also had them put in flush mounted floor vents, which we are now regretting having them do. We could have done a better job ourselves and for much less than they charged. Every vent they put in has cut marks from their saw coming off the corners into the floorboards, and none of the holes they cut for the vents were quite the right size. There is now large amounts of wood putty (which is now starting to dry out and crack) filling the large gaps around the edges. Beyond this they didn't bother to get the ducting properly attached to the vents so we now have several vents that simply aren't connected and one that it looks like they just pounded down the edges of so the vent is half blocked. These vents also seem to be glued in so we have no way to get to the duct work to fix the problems. Throughout the process they never once contacted us to update us unless we first contacted them asking questions. I have attached some pictures to my review to show some of the issues I've mentioned. In general the floors do look better than they did before, but the overall quality is definitely lacking and we will not be using or recommending this company...
Read moreWell, our flooring started off with Home Depot back in March of 2022, we were told it would be 2 months before demo/install... that was fine with us. However, it was about 3 months that I reached out to the store and we heard nothing, only about 23 emails and about 6 months later and we had paid in full by that point did anything happen. Once the work began they said they couldn't complete as there were areas in house that needed more leveling than they could do ( more than 1/8")We had brought up the slope issue in our hallway but they never said they couldn't address it during measurements.... well we were stuck with a subfloor throughout main level and two children for a month! we were told we needed to find our own contractor, so we ran across UB Hardwoods, recommendation from husband's coworker. And I am so glad and had so much trust in this company right from the day of estimate/ Shawn went through plans, options/ tackling of the areas needing repair. He oversaw all the projects we had done, even a few walk throughs to make sure we were satisfied. We were able to get full refund from HomeDepot and went with all flooring from UB, the flooring options at UB were superior to the options we were going to go with, we ended up getting a beautiful LVP which was a higher cost, and nice carpeting! The cost was a little more than what we originally paid with other company, but it was way worth it, as UB was able to make repairs to subfloor spots for a reasonable cost and the work done was very neat. The crew that was assigned to our place spoke Spanish, but they didn't let language barrier keep from speaking/ interacting with us as homeowners, no, they whipped out their phones and used translator!!!!! this was something I have yet to see when it comes to various home technicians. Kuddos to UB for having wonderful crew members. I also used translator to speak and ask questions. Our goal was to get the flooring done properly and UB Hardwoods delivered just that. They are responsive and care about the homeowners and the property. The crew members are very personable, trustworthy and honest. Thank you so very much for all the work you've done. Even installing on Thanksgiving!! We did not...
