Chilled Ponds At Yorktown — Attraction in Poquoson

The facility was fine- clean, nice set up (concessions weren’t working yet so no comment there) Workers were pleasant and helpful

A few things I notice that would help- if someone hasn’t skated before, maybe five a quick “orientation” with skater etiquette and safety. It was BUSY so I expected it to be crazy and crowded. That’s fine. But there were SO many inexperienced skaters (I am as well, but I tried to be safe to myself and everyone around me) There were so many kids basically just catching speed and “seeing that happened” who couldn’t skate. It was INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. My husband had to literally pick my 6 year old up because she had two inexperienced skaters flying at her. No texting or phone calls WHILE ACTIVELY SKATING. I thought that was a given but apparently not.

The edge isn’t a hang out spot. Keep skating please!!!

There were teens literally falling on their stomach (like penguins) to see how far they could slide. 🫣

I Realize the patrons aren’t the facilities fault, but also didn’t feel 100% safe today

Also, I 100% understand it’s for all levels. By no means do I think you should have to be an expert or event providence skater. But you should be as safe as you can be. I’m pretty much that bottom level, so this isn’t shaming inexperience skaters. But know your limits. If you can not skate AT ALL, please hug the wall.

The rink itself is nice and the few dealings I have had with the employees have been positive. Last week, I saw an employee find a folder left at the rink by a customer. Instead of throwing it away as many businesses would do, the employee found a phone number and left a message for folder owner. That was really nice thing to do.

Our experience with the rink mostly surrounds the hockey programs run out of the rink by the Peninsula Prowl. My son has played against and for the Prowl off and on for the last eight years at the Iceplex. This year he played for their travel hockey program and it was a very positive experience. The kids received almost three hours of practice a week and played about forty games - a lot of which they won, which was a perfect number all for a very reasonable price. The coaching instruction was good and all of the kids on the team were nice - as were the parents.

Dont typically post reveiws but felt the need to let people know how bad this rink is. We normally skate quite often at chilled ponds in Hampton Roads and decided to try Yorktown. The skates are very very very low quality and have 2 straps that won't let you get it to fit your foot nicely. That is for figure skates and hockey. If you are unlucky with the terrible skates they have tightening the skate will push the plastic into your foot, and make it incredibly uncomfortable. The quality of the ice was very awkward and lumpy. When we went there were 3 workers and all they did was stand around and complain, they didn't offer help to struggling skaters and didn't do anything. We've been to several ice rinks in the US and if there were workers on the ice they were helping people or keeping the reckless ones under control. If at all possible avoid Yorktown and go to Hamptin Roads, it is immensely better than Yorktown. Ashame because the inside had a nice feel to it and...
