Fort Gratiot Lighthouse is a delightful slice of history that combines stunning views with a rich maritime heritage. As Michigan’s oldest lighthouse, it's been a beacon at the entrance to the St. Clair River for almost 200 years. When you first see the lighthouse, it’s hard not to be impressed by its stately presence against the lake’s backdrop. The grounds are beautifully kept, with lush lawns and picturesque views of Lake Huron, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing day out. One of the highlights of visiting is climbing the lighthouse’s 94 steps. Sure, it might be a bit of a workout, but the view from the top is absolutely worth it. You’ll get a breathtaking 360-degree view of the water and the city of Port Huron – perfect for snapping photos or just soaking in the scenery. But there’s more to Fort Gratiot than just the lighthouse. The on-site museum is packed with interesting exhibits about its history, the lives of the lighthouse keepers, and the maritime history of the Great Lakes. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to share intriguing stories and answer any questions you might have. The lighthouse also hosts a variety of events throughout the year. From historical reenactments and night climbs to family-friendly activities, there’s always something happening that makes each visit unique. For those curious about the technical side of lighthouses, the preserved Fresnel lens and other maritime artifacts offer a fascinating look at the engineering behind these navigational beacons. Accessibility is great, with well-paved paths and plenty of parking. The gift shop is a nice touch too, offering a range of souvenirs from books and apparel to charming nautical trinkets – a perfect way to take a bit of Fort Gratiot home with you. All in all, Fort Gratiot Lighthouse is a fantastic visit for history buffs, families, or anyone who loves a good view. It’s a wonderful mix of education, stunning scenery, and engaging activities that make every visit special. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s definitely worth a stop.

Went up to Fort Gratiot for a sand sculpting competition last weekend. It was a beautiful day so very little could dampen our spirits and this little trip just added to the summertime joy. There was an admission fee that they waived for veterans, teachers and first responders (nice!) and some lovely creations by talented artists. They had a musician play after an informative presentation about working with sand and a pretty beach to walk along after viewing the lighthouse. There's a fee to walk up to the top of the lighthouse but many of the attendees went up there for the experience anyway. That area of the thumb doesn't get the credit or deserves. If you're wondering what to do on a pretty afternoon, consider the Fort Gratiot area and go get some sand between your toes.

My husband and I’ve heading American Canadian border and there was a huge traffic on the bridge due to strike from the Canada’s side. We decided to spend some time relaxing for a couple of hours. Fort Gratiot Light house was a perfect place to seat back. We’re exploring only the grounds which were free.

The Fort Gratiot lighthouse has a very nice beach and some other historical buildings on the property. They even have a cash shop in the garage looking building that has three green garage doors. When I was there they had it open it’s not open all the time but I believe I’ve posted a picture of their hours when it was open they have some nice things in there. Check out the lighthouse and schedule a tour. Tours are I believe Saturdays and Sundays and possibly Fridays they have them. Call the phone number listed for more hours and detail.

Just over the Blue Water Bridge from Ontario Canada, in Michigan. Easy access. It’s right next to the COast Gaurd Station. The water from the bridge was a blue as can be, I’m sure thats how it got it’s name. The light house is cool. Check the website or tours of the light house. It is the oldest Michigan Light house and the first one built (1929) in Michigan. It is still an active light. It marks the entrance to the St Clair River on Lake Huron. A fun stop.
