Sad that "K", "general manager" destroyed the atmosphere. It used to be a great place with friendly staff. Some of the staff were kind hearted and friendly and made you feel welcome. I'm sure he's pushed the good ones out. We'll never be back. No wonder they don't have enough staff, with him running the place. No one would want to work for a tight @$$ little weasle who has no regard for the public or anyone else except maybe his "favorite" waitress. Sad to see what used to be a favorite place go downhill because of a d#&k as a gm. And top down attitude causes staff not to care either. There's no excuse to not roll out the red carpet for people paying $20-$50 for a tiny, low quality meal. It's " K"first, no regard for the customers who pay his salary. I hate narcissists but unfortunately they tend to move up in business because they just don't care. He needs to be up trained in having compassion and his favorite little crummy server too. I guess it was worth it for him to be "right" and tell off the customers. "Big man." And people like him have zero self awareness to even ever think they did anything wrong. I'll spend my hard earned money elsewhere. My wife went in with diabetes asking for a side salad with a burger instead of fries and the tall, brown haired waitress was rude. Then K came over and not only refused the side salad, which we've ordered with a burger before, but as my wife walked out the door, he "warned" the hostess to alert him if she dared come back in to order food because my wife told him "she felt uncomfortable" with the attitude of the server. So K wanted to make sure to be informed by the hostess so he could turn away a diabetic if she dared come back trying to get food with her sugar being low, which she informed him of. I'm glad she didn't faint in front of him. I doubt if he would have even dialed 911. I can't even express in words how horrible this experience was. I love my wife. Anyone with a disability should avoid this place. I only wish I had been with her when she tried to order the burger with a side salad. Cowards like him don't...
Read moreWe found this restaurant online and thought we would try it for my birthday dinner. The view of the river is fantastic. We were seated in a booth up along the back wall and the restaurant was smartly designed in that we could see over all of the other tables and get a great view of the river. The inside is very nice and for those wanting to watch a sporting event, there are lots of flat screens on the walls around the bar. So why only 3 stars with all of these great things going for it. The first thing we noticed when given the menus was the prices were not in line with what we saw online. In fact the prices were quite high. It was my birthday so we figured we would splurge a little more though we couldn’t bring ourselves to ordering what we really wanted as those entree items were close to $30 per plate. My wife got a salad. We were surprised as it came in an average size bowl, could have used a few more greens to fill out the bowl, and had a sparse amount of toppings. I had a perch dinner. I got 4 small battered fillets, a tiny amount of Cole slaw (came in a container the same size as the tartar sauce for the fish) and some cottage fries which were tasty. I am not hard to please but on a scale of 1-10, the food quality was a 6, the amount provided was a 3.5 and because of the very high prices I would say the value was a 3. The one other negative was that where we were sitting was abnormally loud. I’m sure it had to do with the acoustics of the design of our area as I believe sound gets concentrated there and bounces off our wall and low ceiling but there really needs to be more sound deadening such as acoustic panels placed where we sat. There were things we liked about Freighters and I would come back for the view and maybe a beer and munchies at the bar but I will never be back for a dinner. The vibe my wife and I got was that this restaurant was built on a fabulous and likely very expensive piece of property, the building was top notch, and now they had to pay for all of this by providing smaller portions and charging too much. Too bad for them but that was the...
Read moreThe moment I walked into Frieghter's I was totally impressed. The massive dinning room with huge windows create one of Pt Huron's premier riverfront views - nestled just below the Bluewater Bridge and directly across the river from Sarnia,Ontario.
Frieghter's presents an intelligent, understated contemporary design that creates an intimate environment and puts you at ease in such a large, airy space.
Our waitstaff was attentive but did not ask if we had been to Frieghter's before and didn't share with us any of their specialties or specials.
The menu is simple and unpretentious
The service was quick and the food was delicious and the helpings weren't chic skimpy as one might expect in such a setting.
I had the fish and chips which was four good-sized filets on a bed of waffle fries. I was pleasantly surprised that such staple goods were so flavorful. I drank a locally produced hard cider which was rich with earthy, autumn, aromatic notes.
The price was surprisingly competitive in such a tight economy and we all agreed we'd definitely be back.
A few small notes to management
The railing which serves as boundary in the dining room, a design element, and a focal point needs to be dusted. The beautiful light coming in from the huge windows highlighted the dust and hand prints over the 12 or more feet of railing from my vantage point.
There's a very large - very obvious stain on your attractive, expensive, geometric wallpaper. That should be cleaned or covered.
Finally, the bird's nest in your outdoor sign says loudly, "We've been meaning to get to that..."
I offer these helpful suggestions realizing fresh eyes notice issues familiar eyes can easily overlook. I wouldn't take the time to share if I didn't think there was an interest to address them.
