Every time we visit Cyprus wetlands, we see a handful of new creatures that we either missed the first time or frequent the wetlands seasonally. In the past, we have seen the amazing alligators on the island shore, but never ever have seen the gorgeous golden eyed alligator Confidently swimming the entire length of the wetlands pond. This creature was so comfortable in its surroundings, even though there were a dozen humans gazing upon him in awe.
This year, the Cyprus wetlands of Port Royal seem to be full to the brim with a variety of nesting birds, alligators, and turtles . We spoke to a naturalist along the trail and she agreed that there were more native birds here this year than in the past. The raised boardwalk over the wetlands is especially our favorite parts of the hike. One can quietly stand and observe the turtles rising to the surface of the water after swimming stealthy from underwater, hiding places. The signs along the trail provide adequate information about the residences of the Cypress wetlands. The amphitheater today was a spectacular spot to stand and view the hundreds of birds adoring the huge Cyprus and other trees of this very wild looking scene. If you can get there plan on spending hours, take your time go around the loop twice and then enjoy a meal or a specialty drink at the restaurants, literally bordering the Cyprus wetlands. This understated attraction is one of the many diamonds that Port Royal holds for its residence and visitors to the area. So don’t just walk the loop once go eat then come back and walk that loop again and we promise you will see something different every single time . Please remember these creatures call Cypress wetlands home. Many of these birds come here to have their babies and they need quiet and still surroundings. And please, if you see any trash on the trail, pick it up because it ends up going into the wetlands and putting toxins in their drinking water. Let’s work together to protect those that...

Read moreStopping at the South Carolina Welcome Station there had a large 40+ inch touch display with Google Maps on it. I used it to look for parks where we could take a walk. Cypress Wetlands had good reviews and nice photos showing lots of birds and alligators so we entered it into our Google Maps and took a long detour to see what it was. I wanted a place to walk two or three miles. This park has a path that is about half a mile around the wetlands. Some of it is paved and some is a boardwalk over the water.
I have never seen as many birds, turtles and alligators in such a confined area. It’s really amazing how much wildlife is in this park. There were lots of other people walking around the park. Lot’s of very long lenses on cameras and people using binoculars. You didn’t really need a long lens or binoculars as the wildlife is so close.
After doing two loops we headed down the street to get my miles I wanted. It’s a great town which I would love to spend a...
