While the park is available 24 hours I suspect that the bathrooms are only open from 5am to midnight. I see a guy closing up just before midnight. This is a great park with lots of benches, secluded forest spots, a playground and multipurpose tables. The playground is on woodchips and the equipment is in good repair. No parking except for nearby street but they are on transit. There is an underpass which leads to the Woodlawn amphitheater and water park. Though I believe most people consider them one park. The other side had a water feature kids can play in, a water fountain, two sports areas and a terrific open field. A great place to spend a day.

In a city full of parks, Woodlawn is most noticeable for its size and for the car bridge that cuts through the middle of it. This is a fairly large park with a paved path running throughout. There is a small playground with a standard swingset but also a tire swing. There is a small water feature for hot days For sports there is plenty of open green space for soccer, frisbee, or football. There is a baseball diamond and 2 separate areas with basketball hoops. And while there is no “off leash” area that I am aware of, there is plenty of green space for your pets to enjoy. space.

This park is only 6 minutes drive from my house and I don’t think I’ve ever been before. Then during Covid I was hunting for a lesser known park, visited there on a weekday at about 11:30AM, and we had the splash pad all to ourselves! Parking was easy, there is some nice shade, and the kids had a blast!

Woodlawn City Park, nestled in the heart of Northeast Portland's vibrant Woodlawn neighborhood, offers a uniquely classic and enduring park experience that feels deeply woven into the fabric of its community. It's less about a grand statement and more about a timeless, comforting presence.

What truly sets Woodlawn Park apart is its deep historical roots and the palpable sense of establishment. As one of Portland's oldest parks, acquired in the late 19th century, it carries a quiet dignity that newer parks simply haven't had time to cultivate. This history is most evident in its magnificent canopy of towering, mature trees – grand oaks, venerable maples, and other stately species that have watched generations of Portlanders play, picnic, and gather beneath their shade. This impressive arboreal heritage transforms the park into a natural sanctuary, providing unparalleled coolness and a sense of enduring calm that is increasingly rare in rapidly developing urban areas.

Beyond its verdant antiquity, Woodlawn Park is unique in its embodiment of a quintessential neighborhood hub. It's not designed to draw tourists from across the city, but rather to perfectly serve the daily lives of its local residents. Its features are classic and beloved: a well-maintained playground that echoes with children's laughter, especially around its popular seasonal wading pool (a hallmark of many cherished older Portland parks), a robust basketball court for pick-up games, and expansive, open lawns perfect for frisbee, dog walking, or simply lounging with a book.

The park's strength lies in its unpretentious utility and its role as a consistent gathering place. It feels like an extension of the neighborhood's front yards, a democratic space where diverse residents seamlessly mingle. The surrounding historic homes and strong community identity further enhance the park's character, making it feel less like a municipal amenity and more like a cherished, living part of the Woodlawn experience.

In essence, Woodlawn City Park's unique appeal comes from its seamless blend of historical depth, remarkable natural beauty provided by its ancient trees, and its unwavering role as a beloved, essential community cornerstone that perfectly encapsulates the charm of an established Portland...
