My boys and I made a spontaneous stop here during our road trip, and I’m so glad we did! This tour was such a cool and memorable experience. It lasted about an hour and was packed with fascinating stories and history.
What really stood out was how interactive it was—you actually get to walk into the old jail cells and get up close to everything. That’s rare in most museum-style tours, where you’re usually stuck behind barriers. The guide was knowledgeable and kept it engaging.
A heads-up for families: The jail has strong acoustics, and sound really echoes—so I could see how it might be difficult to hear the guide if there were loud or restless kids on the tour. My boys are 8 and 10 and were super respectful and interested the whole time, but this is definitely an experience best suited for children who can stay engaged.
Also, just so you’re aware, the tour includes historical information about executions, including a miniature model demonstration. It’s handled very respectfully and educationally, but might not be ideal for every child. That said, my kids found it fascinating and loved the whole experience.
Pro tip: Once you arrive, take a few minutes to walk through the exhibits and read up on the prisoners before the tour begins. It gives you a deeper understanding and adds great context to what you’ll hear on the tour.
If you're passing through the area, don’t miss this stop. It’s eerie, educational, and truly one of the most unique places we’ve visited!
Ps...wear a sweater as it can a little...
Read moreFirst time we ever saw this place or been on a tour. Tina was very knowledgable, the tour was fun; minus 36 of us crowded into the dark hallways and the staggering light of 3 flashlights bopping around. Being short I was bumped quite a bit by other tour goers, but never in a rude manner. Caught attitude at the beginning and middle of the tour, didnt realize asking any questions wasnt permitted during the walk from one room to the other; but I guess when you do a lot of these tours you lose touch with the consumer and get annoyed easy by new people that wanna know what's goin on because in the back of the tour it was hard to hear. Overall good fun, a lot of information was given but also a lot of unanswered questions.
Since the option to respond to the response from owner isnt available I'll edit the original post. I never said I "didnt enjoy" the tour. What I said was I didnt enjoy the attitude I received not one but twice when I asked a tour related question to two separate people. I feel that the tour was good for what we paid, I didnt however appreciate being brand new and feeling as I'd my questions were a burder. Please dont take my feed back as being inconsiderate for what you are doing, you were not on the tour I have no issues with you or the tour itself. I was giving criticism to the company kept as we moved through the dark halls. If its preferable to not speak then please advise your team to let us know prior to exiting the wait room for us to hold questions as we hold our cell phones,...
Read moreMyself my wife and my daughter took the prison tour. Before the tour we were able to wander around the museum which is fairly similar to any other prison museum. Displays of inmates of note and infamy as well as prison artwork and Weapons confiscated from them. The tour was well over an hour long and our Young tour guide was very well-versed in the history and lore of this prison. Overall I'd say she did an excellent job. The prison is reportedly quite haunted however do not expect much information on that on the tour. However once the tour is over No Holds Barred you can ask the tour guide anything about experiences and legends of hauntings. As a matter of fact as we were leaving my wife was overcome with a very strange sensation of foreboding sadness which required her to get out of the building as soon as possible. I myself did not experience anything although there are areas in the prison which definitely have a heaviness...
