Yesterday, my son did his 1st boat dive ever on the Narcosis. After giant striding in, he got very anxious and could not get comfortable with descending. He had to get back on the boat. The dive shop that provided the open water training did check-out dives 1 & 2 in a local spring, and dives 3 & 4 from a beach within a defined swimming zone. Neither location was much more than 10 ft deep, so it is understandable that he could get anxious jumping into 60 ft from a boat. During the surface interval, the crew was very supportive and encouraged him to try again on the 2nd dive. Shortly before the 2nd dive, Captain Alex came down from the helm, sought him out and gave him the advice that changed things. Captain Alex also assigned a specific Dive Master for my son to further help him be comfortable. The advice worked and he thoroughly enjoyed that 2nd dive. I can't describe the emotion I felt when I saw him at the bottom. What a blessing to have been on the Narcosis with this experience. The care and empathy provided by the crew was very nice. Captain Alex's wisdom, thanks to his expansive experience at SCUBA training saved the day and possibly my son's future as a diver. Thank you Captain Alex, Valentino, Sarah and the rest of the crew who turned around the situation for my son. What was the advice from Captain Alex? He said, once in the water, lay flat on the surface, breath through the regulator, look down into the water, and count to thirty, slowly, before attempting to descend. He explained that this should get him comfortable to descend,...
Read moreDid 2 days of diving in January and 1 day in Febuary with Captain Alex and his crew. Unlike some dive boats I've been on that try to project a laid back "party " atmosphere I found this boat to be professional and safe without being overbearing. There is no doubt Captain Alex is in command and the crew respects him. West Palm Beach dives are drift dives in the Gulf steam which run as close as 3 miles from shore. The current on the first day was going north 2-3 knots. 2 days later it was surging mainly to the north but certainly was not defined. I was concerned the first day when I saw the boat at max capacity 20 + divers and that I was going to be seeing more scuba pro fins than fish fins. Not an issue with this type of diving. Captain Alex drops divers off 2-4 at a time then goes another 300 + yards south and drops another group and does that until the boat is empty. 45 minutes later he and the crew start to pick them up. He claims to have never left a diver behind. The crew counts all the divers twice AND does a roll call after each dive so I believe him.
One bit of advice. Make sure you have fins that you can easily take off in the water as divers can not climb up the ladders with fins on. With 3 foot swells and a surface current running parallel to the transom I was being tossed around like a rag doll holding on to the ladder with one hand and attempting to get my uncooperative fin buckles loose with...
Read moreWe dove with Narcosis for the first time this weekend. We did an afternoon 2 tank drift dive at the Toy Box & Playpen (dive 1) and the North Double Ledges (dive 2). The entire crew were fantastic and the boat is one of the nicest ones we’ve been on. Parking near the pier was easy, there are large restrooms between the parking area and the pier, and there’s plenty of space next to the dock just in front of the boat to unload/load gear. We rented tanks for the trip and it couldn’t have made for an easier trip. It was super choppy with 3 foot waves and a strong current, but the captain was great about explaining the conditions before we got in the boat, the DMs were fantastic offering advice to make the dives enjoyable, and the crew went above and beyond to make the entire process enjoyable. Weights, snacks, and water is available on the boat, and there’s co eres and uncovered seating to choose from. The captain made sure we stayed on schedule while allowing everyone to enjoy the dives. The Riviera Beach Marina had a ton of other stuff to do (including fresh coconuts for sale - great for rehydration after our dives). We will definitely dive with...
