Read moreI'm really surprised that this place has a lot of great reviews because for us, it was majorly disappointing. First of all, it's a mission to get on the island. We had to wait 40 minutes for the ferry and it's hard work having to lug all of your beach gear, tent, charcoal, etc. We went on Labor Day Weekend to relax but I felt like I was doing more labor than ever. Not to mention, the ferry is $10 per person and we had about 20 people so $200 is not cheap. They also don't allow any alcohol so myself and about 10 other people got all of our beer and wine taken away. My husband and I are not heavy drinkers but we enjoy a cold beer on a 93 degree day so it was disappointing that we couldn't have a beer. Once we finally arrived on the island, we had to walk really far to find a grill while my feet were getting attacked by red ants. I was so excited when we found an area to chill and all I wanted to do is relax in the water but the shore is very rocky so sitting on the beach is not comfortable. My nefew's foot got sliced by rocks and and he ended up getting a few stiches the following day. There was also an abundance of police and county sheriffs on the island. You get a wierd vibe like your constantly being watched so by the time we left we started calling peanut island, prison island. I totally understand that they may have had people in past getting rowdy and they want families to feel safe but I thought it was a little over board. After a couple hrs there we decided to leave and take the party to our house because we were worried that we would get stuck in a long line for the ferry. We ended up having a great day at our house BBQ'n, fishing and enjoying our pooI. I wish we would have done that to begin with instead of the huge hassle of peanut island. Oh well, it was definitely an experience and adventure that's...
Read moreA visit to Peanut Island Park is a great way to spend the morning. This 80 acre man-made island on the Intracoastal Waterway near the Lake Worth Inlet has some nice snorkeling around the rock formations. Take the first shuttle boat from the Riviera Beach Marina so you can get there before low tide.
We brought our own beach chairs and umbrella, but there are plenty of pavilions and tiki huts available if you want to be in the shade. There are also restrooms, showers and a campground set in a beautiful lush surrounding.
The island has a 1-1/4 mile well-paved walkway with lush tropical gardens. Along this hike, we saw a nice lagoon area to snorkel or relax at next time. The captain on the shuttle boat ($12 round trip) recommended we try snorkeling at the northern tip of the island where you will be dropped off at the dock. Walk a little further and you will be right near the rocks which is where we snorkeled and saw several types of tropical fish. The water was very shallow in certain areas so it’s pretty good/safe for kids.
There are no food concessions, so if you’re staying until lunch, bring a cooler and definitely some water. There is absolutely no alcohol allowed on the island and your cooler will be checked before you get on the shuttle boat.
The boat runs every 20 minutes from 10am to 5pm and will not run if lightening is detected. We were able to catch the return shuttle right before a torrential downpour, which came out of nowhere. No worries though...there are plenty of places to take cover on the island should this happen.
We will definitely return to Peanut Island for more snorkeling and to check out that gorgeous...
