Read moreMust dine at Uncle Buddy's. This review is more about the restaurant than the beach. The beach is a little congested for my taste. Try the beaches further east like Sapphire bay or the beach at the Elysian both are nicer.
We had just finished visiting Coral World, which is kind of a rip off unless you pay $100+ to see the sea lion. There is a small boardwalk that connects you to Coki Point Beach. Then there are some local girls who waitress at the restaurant, Uncle Buddy's who came out and solicited us to eat there. It seemed a little sketchy at first, their menus were unprofessionally done, there was a sizable group of local men outside loitering and smoking marijuana. The place is open air, with no power or fans. They have seating that looks like they bought it from the Walmart patio section plastic chairs. No credit cards and will run 3 people $125, so bring a decent amount of cash.
Once you settle in though, you have a pretty good view of the beach, and we all ordered the catch of the day. We knew it was fresh, because the waitress was mistaken about what was caught. Ours was Yellowtail Snapper. It was easily the best meal we had on the island and we were guests at the Ritz Carlton. Came totally intact, head, eyes and all cooked and seasoned just right. Presented on a bed of yellow rice with cole slaw and a couple of fried plaintains. It was all very excellent. It was obvious they had just caught it yesterday, because the freshness was outstanding.
I saw a couple come in next to us, and they were put off by the sketchy decor and menus and left. They made a mistake. If you want to eat at one truly authentic local place, Uncle Buddy is...
Read moreCoki Point is a decent beach if you want chairs, drinks, and food. Loud music close to the bar, etc. $5 for chairs and $10 for an umbrella. $12 for a beach cocktail, $8 for a beer. $5 to park as well. Sargassum weed comes ashore here.
Honeymoon Beach on Water Island was our favorite and better in our opinion. No sargassum there. Chairs / umbrellas were free at Dinghy's. Free ride between the ferry dock and Dinghy's, which you could walk if you wanted to as well, it's not far. They only ask you patronize their establishment. They had live island music on the weekend. You have to take a ferry to Water Island, $5 for parking and $5 / person for the ferry. $10 for a beach cocktail and $5 to get an extra shot of rum in it.
We went to both beaches in late August (low season) and both days there were no cruise ships in port. Coki was fairly busy on a weekday. Honeymoon Beach was was less busy on a Sunday, but the annual chili cook-off which is evidently popular may have been giving it some competition.
No surf or swells to speak of in normal trade winds conditions for either beach. Mediocre snorkeling, maybe I'm a bit jaded on that. Water is clear and there is some stuff to see around the rocks at the points. Honeymoon rumored to have some turtles hanging around but I never saw any. Snorkeling is better at St John in the park.
I was glad I rented a car on St Thomas, I think that was cheaper and certainly a lot more convenient than a taxi. There is no Uber or other ride share service...
