B-17 Alliance Museum & Restoration Hangar — Attraction in Salem

A fantastic and unique experience. The volunteers were very friendly and clearly very passionate about the aircraft. The Museum has some really interesting exhibits on not only the history of the B17 but the US during wartime in general. Seeing the reconstruction in progress in the hangar is an experience like no other.I was given a really detailed guided tour which lasted almost 2 hours but it was so interesting it didnt feel nearly that long! Must see!! A B-17 undergoing a full restoration back to flying condition (not merely cosmetics for hangar/static display). There is a huge amount of work yet to be done. This is also a perfect example of what happens to aluminum after being out in the weather for about 70 years.Our tour docent (a former B-24 bombardier) was very good natured and knowledgeable. The volunteers down at the Lacey Lady are incredible, especially Bill. He spent 2.5 hours with me touring the museum and restoration hanger. His knowledge and passion for both the Lacey Lady and WW2 history is inspiring. Not to mention he is a Vietnam veteran himself. He is what makes these types of projects and places special.
