FEBRUARY 2023 UPDATE Don't forget to stop by the restaurant after your round and share a bucket of fries with your friends. Hands down the best French fries you'll have had this year, if not ever! Don't know what their secret is but they're awesome!
SEPTEMBER 2023 UPDATE North Course is in great condition as they groom it for the upcoming international military sports competition (CISM). South Course still languishes awaiting the promised overhaul ("mañana"--Spanish for "not today"). That having been said, I still enjoy the South Course.
Book your round either online or via phone with the friendly and helpful staff. Active Duty military get first dibs (as they should!) followed by retired military, but there are plenty of good tee times for civilians too. The North Course is in great shape. The South Course still has large bare patches in fairways but the greens are in great shape. A driving range provides a convenient and accessible area (plenty of parking, a ramp, adjacent restrooms) to warm up before a round and has an adjacent practice bunker and pitching area which is a nice plus. Additional practice greens and chipping areas are adjacent to the first tees of both courses. The carts are in great shape and there is a convenient sand box at the cart barn for walkers to fill their sand bottles (and repair their divots!). As always the clubhouse and restaurant staff are friendly, accessible and helpful. The pro shop has everything you might need at competitive prices so give...
Read moreWhile this is an excellent course to play at, the on course staff is rude as well as the other golfers. I took my nine year old to play this morning and everything was fun until hole three we were told we needed to speed up. Now this is acceptable, but my kid cannot hit 200+ yards off the tee box so absolutely I understand allowing people to play through. What was the most frustrating thing was to be told by the course assistant that the purpose of golf is to keep up with the group in front of you. What a great way to teach kids that golf is a sport of rude adults who think everyone is at the same ability level. The group behind us expressed frustration to the course assistant in the speed at which me and my son were playing as it was holding them up. I was told to hit the ball and let my kid drop next to mine and play from where I hit. How about you be supportive of a kid who is out trying to learn to play the game. I will not play this course again. Sorry MWR you have failed to hire employees that actually care. To say I am disappointed in the lack of professionalism is an...
Read moreIn San Diego we have so many choices where to play golf. AB North is a bit of a secret. It typically is not among the first tier of choices for local golfers or, especially, out-of-towners. Fine with me, more chance for me to play! However, in my opinion it certainly ranks in the top 10 of "public courses." It has length, terrain, elevations, topography, doglegs, water, bunkers, trees, deer, other wildlife, scenic points, decent greens, nice cart women, and decent practice facilities. I give it 4 stars because the golf snob in me likes pretty resort green, flowered, courses like Sycuan, or Torrey Pines, or some of the semi-private courses that dot San Diego County. But, the reality is that I really love playing this course. It is a military course and it does help to be active military to enjoy all of the perks that AB offers but it is open to us civilians. It truly is a hidden gem of a golf course here...
