This beach is pristine. I saw larger dogs especially loving the water and jumping in and out of the ocean.
However, consider the cons:
There is a VERY LONG unshaded walk on an artificial walkway before you reach the beach. Especially for older dogs or easily-overheating breeds this alone can be a deal-breaker in the summer. I saw some families visibly struggling by the time they got to the end of the walkway. Especially with strollers or wagons.
There is a free water/shower station at the opening of the beach. It's an honor system to use. THERES ALWAYS A WEIRDO. When it was my turn a large shirtless barefoot dude walking from the parking lot, not the beach, cut in line and started touching all the switches near me. He had no dog and no sand to wash off so I dont know what he was trying to do.
People were NOT friendly. Completely unlike Dog Beach in OB or Fiesta Island where many folks (not just dog owners) are social and friendly. There were a lot more boomers here maybe reflecting the neighborhood keeping to themselves, nobody said hello or even responded when I said hi walking the beach. Which is weird for dog owners in an off-leash dog space. Theres a reputation that Coronado is stuck-up, this beach experience definitely was.
Im glad I visited once. It is worth it for your dogs to check out. My dogs are happy at any beach so theres no reason for me to...

Lovely, clean, beach with waves that my dogs like to run/ jump up into. I drive 2 hours at least twice a year to spend a weekend in San Diego with my hell hounds just to take them to Coronado Dog Park and the Dog Park on Soto St (Which now that I mention it... also, does not have a bathroom for the humans). The experience of the car trip for the dogs and I alone is a great bonding experience.
Coronado is a fantastic, quaint, clean town with a drive across a bridge that has never once failed to mesmerize my dogs as they look out the window sniffing the ocean air through the opening in the car window.
Parking/Traffic can be difficult during certain times in the day. You must be patient, it is a nice town and I've never had a bad experience with the locals. So don't be a dick also, I recommend to put the dogs in the car for a few moments as you use the restroom on the No dogs allowed side of the beach as I do before you leave the beach and leave Coronado because, as I mentioned before... traffic can be difficult during certain...
Read moreNormally I go over to Ocean Beach 10/10 all locals and everyone is super friendly. I heard Coronado dog beach sucked from a lot of people but wanted to try it out for myself. I can say I will not be going back. The beach smells horrible and there was a lot of people not to mention “uptight people”. I go to the dog beach every week with my dog he loves it, he’s only a puppy (5 month old German Shepard). He’s trained, he’s knows his recall pretty well and loves playing with other dogs. A couple came down and sat next to us with their dog and my dog naturally wanting to go over and play, he started barking. He’s a dog he’s gonna bark I can’t help that… they started yelling at him and yelled “someone take care of this someone get their dog”. Dude… it’s a dog beach idk what you expect dogs are gonna bark and your dog didn’t even care. Also not to mention it’s a leash free beach. There was people with their dogs on leash that weren’t very friendly so idk why your bringing your dog to a leash free beach when other dogs are bound to run up to them,...
