When I was 15 my best friend and I were walking from La Jolla Shores north toward Blacks Beach, along the way we were looking for washed up “treasures” we found a few MRE’S with disgusting food and some other junk. When we got to the Mushroom house (before the cement wall was built) we walked to the door and yelled in, a man answered and invited us up, we got to climb the central spiral stairs to the main living area that was divided like a pie. The man said it was his parents house who died in a plane crash. We stayed a while and he showed us the house and some blueprints. I now realize how naive we were. A few years later the property including the mushroom house and the house above were for sale for $450,000 this was some 30+ years ago and now the property is worth multimillions. Despite this, the Mushroom Beach House remains a fascinating piece of La Jolla’s history and a must-see for anyone curious about its design or...

The hike to get is is not for the faint of heart, but it's a great workout, so...
