This has to be one of the best places I visited in San Diego on my 2nd time... I'm actually kicking myself that I didnt come here the first time. I was told this was pretty amazing but I was not prepared.
I know the view from up above at Cabrillo monument gives you that incredible depth of blue ocean with cresting waves rolling into the coastline. When you're at the Tidal Pools below... it's another beauty altogether. The way the sun bounces off the different textures and colours of the western side of Point Loma is magical. I think my mouth was on the floor when I stepped down and saw it for what it truly was. It was majestic and completely peaceful. If you know those waves soundtracks... I swear they recorded them here.
The park does close early because it doesn't want people to accidentally walk off the cliffs here... and it can easily happen. There are no barriers and no clear paths as you explore the area. Just your own common sense and hands to keep you from tipping over. It's completely worth it to figure out a way to get the exposed little pools that are rich in sea life.
When I went, it was nearing low tide but not enough to see the larger pools with more animals. I did see the occasional tiny crab and a lot of barnacles that looks more alien than a usual mollusk.
My favourite spot has to be where the lower tides exposes these dark rocks like random chess pieces thrown about and the clear sky just uses the clear calm water to be a mirror and reflect that vivid sapphire colour. I must have taken hundreds of pictures.
I would definitely say that this was a complete highlight of the trip and a must do for anyone traveling...
Read more🌊 Stunning Nature at Point Loma Tide Pools 🌊 Visited the gorgeous Point Loma tide pools with my family on a sunny afternoon. Despite some challenges, the natural beauty was absolutely worth experiencing!
🏞️ Natural Wonder 🏞️ The tide pools themselves are breathtaking! We spotted colorful sea anemones, tiny crabs, and fascinating starfish hiding in the rocky crevices. The geological formations create a stunning landscape against the backdrop of crashing waves.
⚠️ Safety First ⚠️ Be extremely cautious on your way down to the pools. The pathways were very slippery when we visited, and unfortunately my mom took a bad fall and broke her arm. Proper footwear with good grip is absolutely essential here.
🌅 Perfect Timing 🌅 We arrived during low tide which is definitely the best time to visit. The receding water reveals so many hidden marine treasures that are otherwise covered. Check the tide schedule before planning your trip!
🧭 Access Tips 🧭 There's decent parking available, but it can fill up quickly on weekends. The trail down to the tide pools is moderately steep, so be prepared for a bit of a hike both ways.
💫 Overall Experience 💫 Despite our unfortunate accident, the Point Loma tide pools are a remarkable natural attraction that I would recommend to nature lovers. Just come prepared with sturdy shoes, take your time navigating the rocks, and keep a close eye on children and elderly visitors. The incredible marine life and stunning ocean views make it worth the...
Read moreIt is an amazing experience for any age. There are beautiful vista views from any of the three parking lots. I enjoyed the pelicans flying by. Only the first main parking lot has two out houses. Park rangers are on-site for assistance and information. All three parking lots are connected by a main road and a hiking path. Tho the heavy rains earlier in the month washed out part of the hiking path and is closed between lot 2 and lot 3. The path includes steep stairs and natural ground. It is not accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. You will have to have good mobility for the trail and getting down in the tide pools at low tide. We got there early after opening and stayed till late afternoon when the tide pulled out. Low tide is listed between 2 pm and 4 pm. Tho this is whale migration season, we did not have any luck spotting any whales from the vantage points. You can easily spend a whole day here. We started at the tide pools and then toured the light house, visitor center, whale watching vantage points, and then revisited the tide pools at low tide. We lucked out with a beautiful sunny...
