Very convenient to the #1 California trolley bus and a short walk north along the golf course to the coastal path to Sutro Park and the #38. (If making the walk in the other direction, know that some local #38 buses serve the Safeway at the site of Playland, not Sutro Park.) The nearest public restrooms that I know of are at the Sutro Park Visitor Center, only open when the visitor center is also open. I take the bus and visit on the weekends but there always appears to be street parking available. There's a school nearby that could make the area crowded. It's not surrounded by anything else. That's much interesting but just a few minutes away is the lands and view of the bridge. Know that if you come here during the end of the day you will be in the middle of a lot of traffic going to the school which is next to the steps.
