【Bay Area Chronicles】Wholesome Japanese Vibes in San Jose's Japantown

Located in the heart of Japantown San Jose, the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin is a beautiful and culturally rich temple that offers both serenity and history. The temple itself is stunning, with a traditional design that invites reflection and appreciation. Step inside and you’re greeted with a warm, peaceful space filled with intricate details and spiritual beauty. It’s especially wonderful to visit during the Obon Festival in July, when the temple grounds come alive with food, dancing, and community celebration. Whether you’re attending a service, exploring the architecture, or just taking in the atmosphere, it’s a meaningful stop that captures the spirit of Japantown.

I stumbled on this temple while driving around searching for apartments. The people working there were so friendly. They took time out of their day to tell me more about the specific type of Buddhism practiced and how it differed from my own lineage. I plan to start attending Sunday services! For anyone interested in a welcoming and warm Buddhist community, you can’t go wrong with the San Jose Buddhist Church.

Beautiful inside and out, services are beautiful. It's open often when there are street festivals, just follow their web page and you can see what's going on. They have Buddhist educational materials in the office if you are curious.

The smell of the incense inside will trigger deep childhood memories, and it's a lovely, peaceful, place.

Finally, I am forever indebted to Rinban Sakamoto for introducing me to the shakuhachi flute. Years ago, I was an an adult Buddhism class there and was talking with another student, saying I'd tried just about every instrument "except maybe the shakuhachi". Rinban Sakamoto surprised us by handing each of us a PVC beginner shakuhachi that he'd made personally. I knew if I covered all holes I'd get a low tone, and had an idea how to bend the tone, which I did. My reaction: "Wow!"

If it were not for Rinban Sakamoto, I may not have been introduced to the shakuhachi for years, if ever. It is difficult to play, but rewarding in a way very few instruments are.

I don't know how active the shakuhachi club is at present, but Rinban Sakamoto is a wonderful teacher...
